  • Family site 15 minutes’ drive from Angers in the Maine-et-Loire
  • Parc Terra Botanica 20 minutes’ drive; Zoo de la Flèche 45 minutes
  • Spacious grass pitches, a summer snack bar and a heated indoor pool
Family-run and family-friendly, Camping du Port Caroline is a neatly manicured site with pitches partially shaded by trees and leafy landscaping in the Maine-et-Loire. Handily, it’s just 15 minutes’ drive from the historic centre of Angers and all its sightseeing opportunities. The site’s location is pretty convenient too, being 20 minutes by bus (they don’t run on Sundays) from Angers Saint-Laud railway station if you’re travelling on public transport. Five minutes’ drive will take you to the banks of the mighty River Loire for watersports, fishing and château-bagging. Stick around on site, however, and you’ll soon realise the waterpark is central to daily life; the family can snooze on the sun terrace, swim a few laps of the heated covered pool or re-energise under the massage jets, while novice swimmers use the paddling pool under supervision of their parents. There’s plenty going on to entertain all your brood too, with a mini-club and lots of activities including a playground, trampoline and ping-pong tables. You can relax thanks to a plethora of facilities including a grocery store selling local produce and handy stuff like cleaning equipment. There’s also a laidback snack bar serving cold drinks, pizza and paninis on an alfresco terrace during high season.

Powered grass and earth campsite

Liked The exceptionally warm welcome from the hosts. The pitches are enormous and mostly well screened with hedges and trees. The swimming pool is excellent.
It’s easy to find. The nearby village has a bar and a few basic shops, big supermarkets are 5 minutes away.
This is one of the best sites we have ever stayed at.

Disliked Having to leave.

Local attractions

You really ought to have a day in old-world Angers (15 minutes’ drive). Overlooking the River Loire, its historic centrepiece is the vast, grey-and-white Château des Ducs d’Anjou, known for its exceptional medieval tapestries relating bible stories. Once you’ve admired those, take a stroll along the castle’s Promenade du Bout du Monde for views over the city. The Musée des Beaux-Arts and Cathédrale Saint-Maurice are also worth stopping by, and try to end your day with a coffee in pretty Place Sainte-Croix. When it’s the kids’ turn to pick your day’s adventure, they can choose between keeper talks and sea lion shows at Zoo de la Flèche (45 minutes), or lions, tigers and giraffes at Bioparc de Doué-la-Fontaine (40 minutes), housed in a disused quarry. Alternatively, they might prefer the contemporary-style gardens at Parc Terra Botanica (20 minutes), where you can find wacky plant sculptures of unicorns and mammoths, take boat rides or see everything from above in a tethered hot-air balloon.
