General

  • Peaceful three-hectare site scattered with woodland and orchards
  • A 15-minute drive from Angers’ old town and Château de Brissac castle
  • Large pool complex, playgrounds, bike rental, pétanque and tennis

Seeking a stay somewhere sedate in western France? Enter Slow Village Loire Vallée, a three-hectare site scattered with woodland and orchards that puts a focus on leisurely living in pretty Les Ponts-de-Cé.

Pause by the 3,000-square-metre swimming complex at the park or loiter next to the Loire river – this wending waterway a few metres away is just the spot for renting a canoe and sailing off on an adventure (or just wandering across the trails along the banks).

Rendezvous near the site for a meal at the Guinguette En Rouge et Loire restaurant, just outside the gates and open all day long, or rest up with a natural organic wine and craft beer on the terrace under the oak trees. Keen on cooking? Pick up ingredients at the Friday morning market in Ponts de Cé; the village also has food and drink shops including a wine merchant, deli and patisserie.

When not filling up on French fare, pootle around the park in search of activities like tennis, pétanque and football. There are also playgrounds for the youngest members of your tribe and rental bikes for relaxed rides on the Loire à Vélo trail leaving right by the site and into the countryside.

Ambles around Angers are also on the cards from here as the city’s a 15-minute drive away, and thrill-seekers can venture a little further to the Anjou Wake Park (20 minutes) for adrenaline-fuelled activities in the water.

Please note

The grocery shop is open between 04/04 and 10/31.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 06/13 and 08/31 (subject to weather conditions).

Bijou tent and camp kitchen. Great concept. Lovely staff. Wonderful pool complex and set by Loire river. Site suits hippy culture not discerning traveller.

    Disliked:

Toilets, too few; five for the whole site and one of those was French and stinking. Also far too tatty, broken locks, constantly interrupted on loo. Site very noisy as located next to busy kids park.

Local attractions

With its culinary culture, historical heritage and sporting activities, the Loire valley is a prime place for a varied trip in western France. Head to this area to experience the wine traditions of Anjou in the surrounding vineyards or to wander around the world-class castles.

After some activities for the nippers? Take a trip to a theme park – Europe’s largest, Terra Botanica, is 20 minutes’ drive away, and other nearby spots of note include Château de Brissac (15 minutes) for tours of this towering ninth-century structure and its Apocalypse Tapestry.

Angers’ old town, a place of half-timbered homes like the opulent Maison des Artisans and the twin-spired Cathédrale St-Maurice, is also close by to satisfy sightseers seeking history. Stick around for coffee in the centre after a stroll or, in the warmer months, retreat to the restaurant by the gates of Slow Village Loire Vallée and settle in for musical entertainment ranging from techno and jazz to rock and electro.
