Pool

General

  • Woodland site 2km from the beach and La Baule-Escoublac town centre
  • On the edge of Brière Regional Natural Park
  • Large pool, paddling pool, bar, restaurant and takeaway

One of the longest beaches in Europe is a paltry couple of kilometres from the Loire-Atlantique's Camping Les Ajoncs d'Or: the nine golden kilometres of swish seaside resort La Baule-Escoublac on the Côte d'Amour.

Home to a casino, high-class hotels, swanky seafood restaurants, golf courses and a horse-racing track, Le Baule's been a popular pick with clever Parisians and Bretons as a seaside destination for over a century. Its setting in former southern Brittany neighbouring the Loire Valley means there are rich pickings too for castles such as that at Nantes, ancient towns like Guerande, and more coastal spots such as traditional Quiberon and the fishing village of Pornichet, five kilometres away.

Fishing, tennis, indoor swimming, horse riding, canoeing, kayaking, sailing and surfing are close by. For leisure on site, there's a big outdoor heated pool, a paddling pool, a pétanque court, a kids' club, and daytime and evening entertainment.

If you're not sampling seafood (again) in La Baule, the site restaurant, bar, takeaway and food shop will see you covered for eats.

Please note

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 05/01 and 09/10 (subject to weather conditions).

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

A real back to Nature site with clean facilities and helpful staff.06/18/2019

You won't find white painted rocks or wardens with clipboards checking to see whether you have displayed your ticket and you are parked according to their strictures. It is a quiet, peaceful*, friendly site close to La Baule-Escoublac, which has some of the best beaches in France; long sweeping sands with very safe bathing. Several Cycle and walking routes lead to the town and beaches.
The staff are uniformly friendly and helpful; many speak very good English (my French is poor). There is a basic snack bar, which when we were there had very few customers. However, they were always willing to help even opening the kitchen on more than one occasion to cook a portion of frites just for us; bread was available to order for the next day.
The washing/Toilet facilities are reasonably modern and well maintained. Plenty of hot water. As is usual in France, bring your own toilet paper and sink plug for washing up.
There is a decent size heated outdoor pool which is kept clean and warm (certainly while we were there) swimming was most enjoyable. The site is woodland close to a Natural Park and the sound of birdsong is all around. We booked for two nights initially but extended our stay because we enjoyed it so much.
    Excellent value for money.

I am including comments here because, although none of the points gave us any concern, I realise there are those who have a greater need for the comforts of life and have a severe objection to noise not of their own making.

It is a wooded site and as such most of the pitches are sloping to a greater or lesser extent; some are quite uneven. However, that is compensated for by dappled shade in the height of summer and the smell of pine and fresh grass.

There is a road nearby and you can hear the traffic although it is not intrusive. Also single engine aeroplanes and the occasional helicopter fly over fairly frequently especially at weekends. As I said, it didn't bother us.

I didn't try the wifi as I object to paying for something that won't work as well as 4G (past experience has been that this is almost always so on campsites). If you want this facility, I suggest you make enquiries for yourself.

We enjoyed the quiet, informal nature of the site. The swimming pool was very nice but once again was spoiled by people, not just children, ignoring the rules. The showers were good. The pitches a good size although on a bit of a two way slope in places.

    Disliked:

The whole site had the feeling of being “unloved”, it needs a good deal of cosmetic work to bring the site up to a better standard.
Because most of us now rely on Wi-Fi, it should be free and of a good standard. The cost should also be shown as an option on Pitchup.com.

Good pitches lots of shade and we used the cafe and had a pizza and beer very reasonably priced.
As some of the more negative reviews the W/c block was old but it all worked and was clean so had no problem with its age.

Local attractions

The fine sands of the nine-kilometre La Baule beach are less than two kilometres from the site, the same distance as the restaurants, shops, bars and casino of La Baule-Escoublac's town centre.

Those into history have heaps to pick from, like the Breton fishing village of Pornichet five kilometres away; the walled city of Guérande, seven kilometres from the site, and the spectacular old sites of Nantes, about an hour and a quarter to the east.

La Baule is edged by the landscapes and wetlands of the Brière Regional Natural Park, a top Pays de la Loire place for birdwatching. You could also explore the park's Grande Brière Mottière marsh and its canals, reed beds, wetland meadows, peat bogs and islands by boat, or take in the vista from the bell tower of Saint-Lyphard church.
