It's free, quick and easy!
- Family-friendly site in the scenic Pays de Redon
- On-site waterpark with pool and waterslide
- Less than an hour from Nantes and Guérande
Torn between hols with a lot of go-go-go and a getaway where you barely need to move? At Camping de L’Hermitage, a family-friendly site on the outskirts of Guémené-Penfao and 20 minutes’ drive from the town of Redon in the Loire-Atlantique department of Pays de la Loire, you can have the best of both worlds.
While you’d be forgiven for not leaving the site for your entire stay (there’s a waterpark, if that’s any indication), this is still a top spot to use as a base for exploration: it’s in the Pays de Redon, and there are loads of waymarked hiking trails, including a highly recommended route along the Nantes-Brest canal nearby.
There’s plenty more to do on site when you get tired of wandering the countryside (or just plain tired): as well as the waterpark (which has a pool and waterslide), there’s a book corner, games room, tennis court and badminton court, table tennis and table football, a playground for the kids and plenty of evening entertainment.
You’re certainly going to work up an appetite here, so you’ll be pleased to hear that you’re going to be well catered for foodwise too. This is France, so you can expect the usual fresh bread and pastries every morning (on request), but there’s also a snack bar open daily during the high season, and a bar with a covered terrace where you can wash down all your eats.
If you’d prefer to look after yourself, stock up on edible essentials at the supermarket in Guémené-Penfao (it’s a five-minute drive) or venture off site for a slap-up meal at one of the restaurants within 15 minutes.

Local attractions
Planning a family holiday? There’s plenty nearby to keep the kids occupied: within around an hour’s drive, there are two tropical animal parks, a treetop adventure park, the Océarium aquarium at Le Croisic, Planète Sauvage animal park and La Boissière du Doré zoo, plus beaches at La Baule, Pornichet and Saint-Brevin-les-Pins.
There’s lots for grownups too, with Redon’s St Sauveur Abbey and Musee de la Batellerie de L’Ouest within 25 minutes, and Nantes a 50-minute drive from site. Make tracks for Nantes to poke around the Château des Ducs de Bretagne and the highly-recommended Jardin des Plantes de Nantes, and for high-end shopping at Passage Pommeraye; you should also take a trek to the must-see Machines of the Isles of Nantes.
Turning towards the coast, visit Guérande to crawl along the ramparts, wander into the salt marshes and visit the doll museum, or head to Saint Nazaire to explore the Submarine L’Espadon, the Escal’Atlantic historic ocean liner experience and the scenic boardwalk.
Get out in nature with a day (or two, or three) navigating Brière Regional Natural Park, less than an hour from the site.
