It's free, quick and easy!
- Family-friendly site with fishing pond, trampolines and bouncy castle
- A 15-minute drive from Calais for Eurotunnel and ferry port access
- Restaurant, morning bread delivery, pétanque and miniature golf
Get a warm welcome pretty much as soon as you arrive in France – or a warm goodbye, for that matter – at Camping L'Escale, a calm, green and well-maintained site around 20 minutes’ drive from Calais for access to the Eurotunnel Terminal and ferry ports.
This park in Wacquinghen is, needless to say, a top spot for travellers seeking a stopover before hitting the road further into France or over into England. The facilities all add to the appeal as well – they include a fishing pond, tennis court, miniature golf course, pétanque area, games room and playground with trampolines and a bouncy castle.
And the services don’t stop there… The Pas de Calais site’s also got wifi for plotting how long the route to the Eurotunnel’s going to take, a small grocery shop for investing in ingredients for making a quick breakfast before venturing off and bread delivery to prep sandwiches for lunch. In the evenings, order dinner – and propose a toast to a happy hol to come or a safe journey home – at the traditional restaurant on site.
Hanging about at Camping L'Escale long enough? Sandy Opal Coast beaches like the one at Wimereux are within 10 minutes’ drive, while walks along the scenic Gris-Nez and Blanc-Nez capes with stunning views of the English Channel are around 20 minutes away.

Local attractions
Drive for 10 minutes to reach the coast around Wimereux for one of the top beaches in the area and try your hand at windsurfing, paddleboarding and kitesurfing while you’re here. For a wander in wilder nature, dawdle over to La Pointe Aux Oies and the Dunes de la Slack or forget about strolls and have a go on the green at the town’s coastal golf course.
For indoor amusement, Cité Europe (15 minutes) is a mall-type complex housing shops selling everything from fashion and beauty to sport and leisure, along with an enormous cinema, a bowling alley and fast food outlets. If the kids still need distracting after a morning here, a trip to Hélicéa’s pool and ice-skating rink (10 minutes) should do the trick.
Sticking to the indoors, spot sea creatures up close – including tropical fish, seals, sharks and penguins – at the biggest aquarium in Europe, the Nausicaa Centre National De La Mer (10 minutes) aquarium.
Out in the open air again, Boulogne (15 minutes) has an old town that’s top for traipsing about; the ‘Upper City’, as it was once known, is full of historical buildings. For another glimpse of the past, the Second World War Museum (20 minutes) displays artefacts tracing the events of the period between 1939 and 1945 in an 800-metre-square space.
