- Seafront site with direct access to Hemmes de Marck beach
- A 15-minute drive to Calais; 40 minutes to the Marais Audomarois
- Heated pool, waterslides, fishing pond and bar-restaurant on site
If you’re after a holiday by the beach, you’ll be onto a winner at Camping de la Plage. As the name suggests, this Nord-Pas-de-Calais site is right by the beach at Hemmes de Marck, with sea views and direct access to the sand.
And what a lovely beach it is too, lined with wild dunes and stretching out to three kilometres of sand at low tide. The views change throughout the day so there’s always something new to look at – and plenty of activities out there too, from paddling, beach picnics and sandcastle building to sand yachting and horse riding from the leisure centre a few minutes’ walk away.
Keen to swim but don’t fancy a dip in the sea? Head over to the site’s pool instead – it’s heated and covered, with a toddlers’ area, sun loungers and some waterslides (the latter only open during the summer holidays). Other options for a bit of downtime on site include fishing for trout in the pond (free catch-and-release fishing for guests) or playing games of pétanque and billiards. There’s also a playground for the kids, and a space that’s dedicated to activities and themed evenings.
Barbecues are allowed for those who fancy doing their own outdoor cooking; others may prefer to take it easy with meals and drinks at the bar-restaurant. A bread delivery service runs in high season too, and there are a few little shops close by. For other supplies, head to the shops and supermarkets over in Calais (15 minutes’ drive away).

Local attractions
Calais (15 minutes’ drive) is primarily known as a ferry port, but it’s got its own attractions, including an elegant town hall, the City of Lace and Fashion museum and the amazing Dragon's Company, where huge fire-breathing mechanical beasts walk along the seafront – and you can ride them too.
For a couple of other things youngsters are likely to enjoy, try Eurolac, with its treetop trails, ziplines and pedal boats, or the open-air museum Saint Joseph Village, recreating a village from the early 20th century. Both are about 25 minutes’ drive away. The Mimoyecques WW2 Fortress (half an hour) also helps to bring the past to life.
To put some natural scenery on your schedule, plan a walk along the clifftops to see Cap Blanc-Nez (half an hour) or head out to canoe, cycle or walk through the watery landscapes of the Marais Audomarois (40 minutes). Closer to home, the Jardin Botanique du Beau Pays (10 minutes) is another nice place for a wander.
