  • A 35-minute drive from the Calais and Dunkirk channel crossings
  • Two pools, outdoor gym, pizza bar and cosy bar and restaurant
Peaceful, green and spectacularly scenic... Camping Château du Gandspette is a quiet countryside site set among the grounds of a 19th-century château, across 11 hectares of bloom-filled wooded parkland in the Caps et Marais d'Opale Natural Regional Park. The Calais and Dunkirk channel crossings are 35 minutes' drive away. This park’s pleasant woodland setting makes for a pristinely peaceful stay: the site has spacious and landscaped pitches surrounded by mature trees, loads of green space and lots of blooms and hedges. Leisurewise, there are two outdoor pools (one heated), ping pong tables and tennis courts, as well as a multisports area and an outdoor gym; activities run in high season too. Food is well sorted at the site’s well-appointed summer bar and restaurant, serving grilled meats and regional specialities such as Flemish carbonnade and potjevleesch, and at the snack bar for pizza and fries to eat in or take away. The bar and its viewsome terrace is where you can sink a drink or two (while watching major sports fixtures, if that’s your leisurely bent). And if the scenery isn’t enough to rouse you from your slumber? Freshly baked bread is on sale every summer morn.

What customers say

A beautiful, well-kept site with spacious pitches. Staff, especially Julien, are friendly. Great amenities for all ages. Ideal stopover near Calais. Minor notes: pitch leveling, limited vegetarian food.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked We had a great time at this site – it's so peaceful and well-maintained. Everything was clean and tidy, and the pool looked spotless and clearly well cared for. The showers could do with a bit of an update, but they worked just fine and, most importantly, the water was hot!

We especially enjoyed the trail that circles the campsite – it was perfect for walking the dogs and taking in the surroundings. The owners were absolutely lovely. We asked if we could arrive a day early, and they were more than happy to accommodate us.

All in all, a really relaxing stay. We’ll definitely be back!

Power optional grass campsite

Liked Friendly and fast check in - was given details of our allocated pitch but also given a few others to choose from if preferred. Toilet and shower blocks cleaned regularly - any mess was due to users not clearing up after themselves or slightly mucky floor due to the weather. General camp site noise and children playing as expected during the day but by 10pm all was quiet. Bar and resturant quite basic with limited choices but does the job. Didn't pay for wifi as we had full signal on our phones at all times so can't comment on that. Bakery items sold on site each morning were very tasty (cash only). Swimming pools were a great bonus to have on site!

Disliked Not dislikes, but would have been nice to have a small shop on site selling the basics (although supermarket is less than 5 mins away by car so I understand why they haven't got one) and just for info for others, some electric pitches need a euro adapter.

Power optional cement/asphalt RV campsite

Liked Good location
Very friendly and helpful staff
Good sized pitches
Heated Swimming Pool
Bouncy Castle and playground for the kids
Very clean toilets and showers

Disliked On a minor note, there were not many flat pitches, which meant going out in the motorhome was a bit of a pain

Power optional cement/asphalt RV campsite

Liked Large site but doesn't feel it due to hedging and woodland. Plenty to occupy the kids. Facilities very clean.

Disliked Nothing really.

Local attractions

The region is well served by road, rail and sea connections, including services such as the Eurostar and several from major Channel maritime operators. Camping Château du Gandspette is 45 minutes’ drive from the Calais-Fréthun high-speed rail international station too, making one-hour journeys to London, 30-minute journeys to Lille and two-hour journeys to Brussels and Paris a cinch. The site’s Caps et Marais d'Opale Natural Regional Park setting is tiptop for hikes and bike rides around the area, with the GR 128 hiking trail (between Wissant in France and Gand in Belgium) within easy reach. Horse riding, fishing and golf are available in Ruminghem and St Omer, and for kid-friendly days out, bowling, go-karting and theme parks such as Dennlys Parc at Dennebroeucq and Plopsaland de Panne in Belgium are all within an hour’s drive. History buffs can take a trip to the Eperlecques Blockhouse, a kilometre from base, and the La Coupole bunker complex (aka the St Omer Dome) is less than 20 minutes’ drive away. Other war memorial sites and points of interest well worth a trip to include the Fortress of Mimoyecques, the 1939-1945 Museum at Ambleteuse, the Memorial Museum at Calais, the Atlantic Wall Museum in Audinghen and the Memorial Museum at Dunkirk.
