It's free, quick and easy!
- Family-friendly site five minutes' walk from the beach in Zuydcoote
- 15 minutes' drive from Plopsaland theme park and Plopsaqua waterpark
- Evening entertainment, food trucks and visiting market on site
Five minutes’ trot from the beach, heaps of activities within a half-hour drive and kind folk that bring your dinner to you? Oui, Camping Zuydcoote Beach is the place for folks who’d like to dedicate very little energy to getting about on hols (quite right too, you’re here for a rest, n’est-çe-pas?) An extra dollop of fine news for visiting Brits: it’ll only take you 45 minutes or so to drive up here from Calais, which is mighty handy for those whose idea of a good time doesn’t involve hours of trundling along a motorway.
Settle in here and, as the name suggests, seaside time is close at hand – a mere few minutes’ sandy saunter through the dunes, in fact, and you’ll be on Zuydcoote beach. Should little legs require even more instant sandy access, a sandpit is in the playground, along with an inflatable castle and lots of other play equipment, all newly installed in 2017. Fun facilities aren’t limited to the tinies, though: there’s also a pétanque court and a large grass field where various sporting challenges can be played out among the older age groups.
You’d be well advised to save a bit of energy for later in the day, though – all sorts of evening shenanigans are lined up over at the bar, including karaoke, live music, bingo nights and discos. Luckily, in high season you’ll not have to expend too much effort to get everyone fed, as you can simply wander over to the mobile snack bar at the site’s entrance or pick up something from the pizza truck that pops in a couple of times a week.
Of course, you’d be most welcome to light the coals on your barbie instead should you be up for it – there’s a supermarket 10 minutes’ walk away for all the bits and pieces, or you could wait for the weekly travelling market to come by and bring you fresh veggies, fruit, olives and sausages.
It appears that everything here has been designed to make your hols run as smoothly as poss (how thoughtful). Paths through the site are nice and wide for easy manoeuvring, there’s wifi access (small charge applies) and toilet blocks are fitted with showers, baby bathroom and accessible facilities.

Local attractions
Along the beach from Zuydcoote the sandy stretch reaches the small town of Bray-Dunes, home to a watersports centre where you can hire boats or take lessons in sailing, windsurfing or land yachting. You can drive up there in about 10 minutes or walk through the Dune Marchand National Nature Reserve in around half an hour. If you’re just after somewhere to stretch the legs with a lengthy walk, keep going once you’ve hit Bray-Dunes, as there’s plenty more dune walking to be done on the other side – walk for just over an hour or so from the site and you’ll hit the Belgian border (and a nice restaurant where you can refresh with lunch/coffee/something a little stronger).
Other outdoorsy pursuits locally include a golf course just outside Dunkirk (20 minutes’ drive), horse and pony rides (from a riding centre 15 minutes away) and paintballing (15 minutes away).
It’ll take you about 20 minutes to drive down to Dunkirk to learn about its pivotal role in World War II at the Dunkirk 1940 Museum, and visit the LAAC contemporary art museum with its smashing sculpture garden. If you’ve got kids in tow, also consider visiting the town’s aquarium and Fort-Mardyck Zoo.
Just a quick hop over the border into Belgium (15 minutes or so) takes you to two more fably family-friendly attractions: the Plopsaland theme park, with heaps of rides and play areas for all ages, and Plopsaqua, a huge waterpark with loads of waterslides, water features and pools including a disco pool and disco slide (and also a sauna and hot tubs for the pleasant pickling of accompanying parentals).
