It’s cleverly convenient that La Bordette is quite so kid-friendly, for it’s only 10 minutes from a fine big pirate park: better get practising your swashbuckling…
La Bordette is a family-friendly site under a kilometre from the Tarn-et-Garonne village of Valeilles, in the famed and scenic south-west France area of the Quercy Blanc. The kids mightn’t be too overawed by the local landscapes (pffft), but they’ll surely like other aspects of a stay in these parts, from the aforementioned pirate park to whirling about at the local tree climbing centre and adventure park or delving into caves about half an hour away.
This is a site firmly for foodies too, as table d'hôte dinners are held six nights (oui, six) a week dishing up fresh homemade food and local wine (perhaps the vino aspect isn’t one for the kids…) There’s still loads for them to do by day, however, as La Bordette has a well-equipped outdoor playground as well as a roomy games room with billiards, table tennis, table football and a play corner (and a bar for les grownups). A breakfast buffet is laid out every morning too.
Also on site are a big heated pool with sun loungers and parasols alongside on a handsome terrace, a pétanque court and a trampoline. As befits a place that feeds and waters its guests six nights a week, there’s no shop – but the summer night market at Dausse is five minutes’ drive away to sort you out with supplies for day seven.

Local attractions
That pirate park? It’s at the medieval fortified town of Penne d'Agenais – fortified by one Richard Lionheart in fact, although the kids will probably say Aaarr to any grownup attempt to impart this knowledge.
Other kid-friendly days out round and about include the tree climbing and adventure park 20 minutes’ drive away and subterranean times at the caves around Fontirou and Lastournelle within half an hour. If you care for more time in the car (kids: ‘yes’), Walibi Sud-Ouest theme park is 50 minutes away at Roquefort.
And of course you may be on hol sans enfants. If so, recommended potters include the hilltop town of Pujols (20 minutes), gabare trips around Puy l’Evêque (35 minutes), venturing east to Cahors (55 minutes), and hiking or wildlife watching around the Lot-et-Garonne’s 2,500 kilometres of trails.
Plenty of sightseeing options are back at Penne if you don’t want to travel far: take your pick from a wander around the ruins of R Lionheart’s fortress, the Peyssel bridge, the workshops on Rue Bombecul and the summer arts and crafts market held every day in July and August. You could of course slip along to the pirate park too…
