- Rural wooded site near Payrac, with scenic views and dark skies
- A 10-minute drive from kayak trips on the Dordogne river
- Restaurant, kids' club and farmers' market on site in summer
Ever heard of the Black Triangle of Quercy? Fret not – this is the name given to the 30km² area of dark sky reserve over the Causses de Quercy Regional Natural Park. The lack of light pollution makes this a fab place for evenings spent gazing up into the starry skies (either from the comfort of your berth or on an expert-led astronomical walk in the park).
The nighttime views are most excellent from Camping Les Hirondelles, and so are those out over the surrounds by day, as it's in a rural spot five minutes’ drive from the nearest village of Payrac. It’s all been very cleverly set up too – the restaurant/bar terrace overlooks both the pool and the playground for easy snacking and giving parents a comfy place to keep a beady eye on the small sorts.
Facilities for pétanque, table tennis and team games are also on site, and in summer there’s a busy programme stuff for kids and young teens (ages three to 14) six days a week. Foodies can pick up local treats from the farmers’ market that passes by the site once a week in high season (this, combined with sending the kids to a cookery class, could prove a winning combo…).

Local attractions
Get out and about into the locale on foot or by bike – there are loads of waymarked trails nearby, and the friendly folk on site are happy to advise on suitable routes for your tastes. In summer they’ll also help hook you up with other activities: via ferrata climbing excursions, perhaps... or kayaking trips on the Dordogne (also available from Souillac, 10 minutes away).
It’s said there are at least 1,001 châteaux around the Périgord area; visiting them all may be a bit of a stretch so you’ll need to pick wisely. Head to Château de Fénelon for gorgeous views over the Dordogne, visit the dungeon and kitchens of Château de Beynac or take in the Art Deco details at Château des Milandes.
Not all attractions are above ground; a trip to the vast Gouffre de Padirac cave system is highly recommended – it’ll take you 45 minutes or so to drive there to descend 75 metres below the surface for a boat trip through the underground lakes and caverns.
