  • Family-friendly woodland site in the bastide town of Bretenoux
  • A 20-minute drive to Gouffre de Padirac; 35 minutes to Rocamadour
  • Pétanque court, ping pong tables and over eight acres of woodland
If over eight acres of shaded woodland on the banks of the river Cère sounds like your kind of spot, hot-foot it down to Camping La Bourgnatelle in the Lot department. This family-friendly site has oodles of leisure facilities for young and old and is within easy walking distance of shops and restaurants in the bastide town of Bretenoux. Many chilled hours can be spent in the 200m² outdoor pool (open during high season only), where there are plenty of sunloungers on hand for post-dip snoozes. The sun deck also makes a comfy spot to keep a close eye on kids playing in the 100m² splash zone (also open during high season only). In summer, you can also drop them off at the kids' club for organised activities. Other active options include a pétanque court and ping pong tables – make sure to get some practice in here if you fancy competing in any of Camping La Bourgnatelle’s high-season tournaments.  Bring your own bike to Camping La Bourgnatelle for peaceful pedals along the Cère at sunset. Dinnerwise, you're welcome to cook your own food over a barbecue or check out the on-site bar-restaurant (open during high season only); there are also several eateries across the bridge in Bretenoux.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Friendly owners.
Good position by river on edge of town. Good shops in walking distance.
Plenty of hot water in showers. ‘Sanitaires’ were clean.
Plenty of shade.

Disliked: Pitch given was a bit narrow for van with awning.
No seats on toilets
No security - the barrier could be opened and closed manually at any hour.

Not the campsite’s fault- town lacked any decent places to eat. Well reviewed restaurants on line were closed.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Tentenplaatst was ruim en goed. Lekker dichtbij heel mooie stad. Algemeen vriendelijk.

Local attractions

There's a lot to get up to in Lot. Fancy playing at being pilgrims for the day? Head to Rocamadour and the Sanctuary of the Black Madonna (35 minutes' drive). Curious about chasms and caves? Wend your way along the underground river at Gouffre de Padirac (20 minutes) or hitch a ride on the miniature train at Lacave to snap some stalactite pics (40 minutes).  Outdoorsy jaunts are also highly recommended here – this part of France is a pretty place, so don't leave it unexplored. The Gimel waterfalls (about an hour) are home to three impressive falls and loads of clearly marked trails, while those with an adventurous streak can swing through the trees at a nearby high ropes centre (40 minutes). Closer to home, you can also pick up a canoe or kayak in Bretenoux for paddles on the peaceful river Cère. In need of a kid-pleasing itinerary? Camping La Bourgnatelle ticks that box, too – Gramat animal park (20 minutes), a waterpark with tons of slides (30 minutes) and the family-friendly Château de Castelnau-Bretenoux (five minutes) are all close by.
