  • Peaceful, scenic Pyrenees site at the foot of the Col du Soulor
  • In the Val d’Azun, about two kilometres from Arrens-Marsous
  • Family-run for over 40 years, with a simple and eco-friendly approach
Family-run Camping Le Gerrit has been welcoming guests for more than 40 years… and when you take a quick look at the pictures you’ll no doubt be able to understand why people are so keen to visit (and indeed revisit) this gorgeous spot in the Val d’Azun. This is surely one of the most scenic locations in the Hautes-Pyrénées, at the foot of the Col du Soulor and on the edge of the Ruisseau du Gerrit. As it’s in the Pyrenees National Park, there are lots of options around for active pursuits including hiking, cycling and climbing, and also for gentler days of fishing, low-paced walks and time spent browsing in local markets and villages. Life moves at a pretty leisurely pace on site as well – in keeping with the site’s eco-friendly approach there’s no pool, kids’ club or entertainment here, just a café and essential amenities including toilets, showers and a washing-up area. The village of Arrens-Marsous is about two kilometres away, with a supermarket and butcher as well as a couple of restaurants.

Primitive grass campsite (XL)

Liked Nice grassy pitch. Nice facilities. Very welcoming - with some provisions for sale in the small office.

The 25min hike to Arrens has a footpath, and is well lit. Arrens has good grocery store, several very french restaurants, and a really nice bar with shady trees.

There are other campsites closer to Arrens, but they looked more commercial, and less green.

Local attractions

The nearby Col de Soulor (15 minutes’ drive) has been a regular feature on the Tour de France schedule, so keen cyclists may like to follow in the competitors’ tyre tracks by tackling the climb themselves. Other outdoor activities nearby include climbing on the Via Ferrata du Then (10 minutes’ walk) and family-friendly thrills like go-karts and toboggan runs at Station du Hautacam (40 minutes). Something a little less hair-raising? Maybe you’d like to take a walk around Lac d’Estaing or Lac de Suyen (both 20 minutes) or fancy venturing underground to see the fabulous rock formations at Grottes de Médous (50 minutes). And of course there’s always the option of relaxing in the thermal spa at Les Bains du Rocher (35 minutes). If you’ve got kids to entertain, you may like to try places like Animal Park of the Pyrenees (15 minutes), which has guided tours, a petting zoo and bird of prey experiences, or the musical bird shows at Donjon Des Aigles (25 minutes).
