French hols: all about the food (and the accompanying wine)? Settle among like-minded souls at Camping Pré Fixe, a Midi-Pyrénées site just outside the village of Cassagnabère-Tournas.
Bring along some outfits with plenty of stretch in them, for site owners Cyril and Céline have put in a whole lot of effort to hone the offerings at their bistro, stacking it full of carefully chosen vino varieties and a daily menu of freshly cooked dishes and local treats. This is a chicken nugget-free zone, so smaller guests can sample reduced-size portions of the main dishes; special diets can also be accommodated with an advance word in the ear of the chefs. Sociable theme meals are held weekly throughout the summer, and well worth being around for (think barbecues, or giant risottos…).
Working up an appetite for such treats is a cinch – take a swim in the heated outdoor pool, play games of tennis, badminton or pétanque, have a workout in the gym or hire bikes to pedal around the surrounds. And post-meal digesting? Take a snooze in the shady gardens or find a spot in which to admire the views of the Pyrenees (a playground, trampoline, board game library and kids’ club are on hand to entertain any nippers who aren’t up for so much sitting down).
If you fancy a gentle stroll after dinner, the friendly folk on site recommend the amble up to the village’s bar, where live music gets the party vibe going on Fridays and Saturdays.

Being in the foothills of the Pyrenees means plenty of scope for outdoorsy activities if you need to work off a few of the calories consumed… an 88-kilometre greenway bike path passes through Cassagnabère-Tournas, and activities in the surrounds include horse riding, climbing, rafting, canyoning and paragliding (plus walks both challenging and leisurely, of course).
Lots of local villages are worth a stop as you roam, including Aurignac (10 minutes), home to a prehistoric site, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site at Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges (40 minutes). For a somewhat bigger settlement, head off to Toulouse (an hour) for art galleries, a peaceful Dominican monastery and the excellent space-themed Cité de l’Espace.
