  • Small, relaxed site in scenic setting next to vineyards and forest
  • Table d'hote and barbecues in the orchard; evenings around the firepit
  • Pétanque competitions and resident donkeys on site
Open since early 2017, Domaine Le Poteau in the Gers department is a small, scenic and eco-friendly site. The friendly hosts are Matt and Kim, two avid travellers who have a real passion for what they do. The couple hosts dinner evenings in the orchard a couple of times a week, so you should feel right at home. As it's France, you may care to check out the local produce – easily sorted here too as Le Poteau is next to an Armagnac vineyard, and close to the wine-producing district of Côtes de Gascogne. And as it's France, you may then need to burn some gastronomic calories off… also a cinch, as the Midi-Pyrénées has around 30,000 kilometres of footpaths to tackle including loads of local routes. Domaine Le Poteau is a short walk from the medieval village of Castelnau-d'Auzan, on a hillside and in a wildlife haven, with well-maintained grounds and plenty of shaded spots. Its facilities include communal firepits and a play area – and you must tackle games of pétanque while here, as the site's weekly competition offers 'disappointing and mildly insulting' prizes for the victorious: obviously you should go all out to win.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked Best hosts at any campsite we've stayed at. Matt & Kim have hit a really good balance at Le Poteau. If you're looking for luxury and every service imaginable then this is NOT the site for you. M&K are deliberately keeping the site rustic and simple with spotless toilets/showers. It is a quiet relaxing site. Their emphasis is on friendly helpfulness. The pitches are allocated but not regimented with plenty of shade. There are a few free range chickens roaming the site to add to the rustic feel. Bakery and small supermarket at nearest village, Castelnau (10 mins cycling). Plenty of easy cycling from campsite.

Disliked Nothing (except Voie Vert cycling route to the north of site is badly maintained and not worth trying, the quiet roads are a better choice).

A really beautiful small site in stunning area of Gers ,fab hosts ACE!

Power optional grass campsite

Liked Everything! We feel this is the best campsite we’ve ever stayed on in Europe or UK .,very beautiful, peaceful , well kept and fabulous hosts in Kim and Matt . It is set in Gers, a beautiful region of vineyards and excellent for active holidays, cycling and walking . We were greeted on arrival with a chilled glass of wine and Matt and Kim were helpful from the start . We wished we had booked a longer stay . Everything is beautifully kept and very clean , not a big site but very comfortable

Disliked Nothing to dislike!

Power optional grass campsite

Liked The peaceful organic site. The welcome from the amazing hosts. We were welcomed with a glass of wine and offered some amazingly large eggs at a decent price. The free range chickens wandering around the site contributed to the rural feel. The delightful village/town with a lake and patisserie on the edge is a short cycle ride away. They also had local wine of good quality on offer. There’s an amazing Armagnac producer a short drive away.

Disliked Not exactly a dislike. The couple have recently acquired the site and have lots of plans for improvement. We were the first customers and as it was off season some of the facilities were not available. A morning bread order was not on offer at the time although I am sure it will be introduced soon.

Perfect stay at this beautiful place. Lovely hosts.…

Power optional grass campsite

Liked Such a lovely campsite - relaxed atmosphere, spacious pitches, modern and clean toilets/showers/laundry area and amazingly friendly and helpful hosts. Look out for event nights as the food is great and it's a relaxing evening meeting others on the site. The local village is lovely too with an easy stroll to the local swimming pool and friendly owners of bars/cafes in the area.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked A perfect stay from beginning to end. Greated on arrival by Fiona......despite the unseasonal rain. Plenty of useful info given regarding the local area......and accompanied with a free glass of wine. Beautiful site amoungst the trees and orchard. Very quiet and only a short walk to the village. Alasdair cooked in the barn on our second night and we got the chance to further meet other guests and locals. All in all a very relaxing few days.

From the manager: It was such a pleasure. Thank you for being such great guests we just wish you could have stayed a bit longer. I received a lovely message from Victoire at Danis who also enjoyed meeting you

Great location for a few days to a week 👍

Power optional grass campsite

Liked Small relaxed site, good facilities including bar and food (not every night). Easy walking distance to the village with bars and restaurants and swimming pool. Pitches are irregular not privet edged boxes

Disliked Some people didn't like the free range chickens.

From the manager: Many thanks for your kind comments. Sorry if the chooks were a bother. We do have options to distract and deter.....

Local attractions

It's about a kilometre from here to Castelnau-d'Auzan on the edge of Landes forest, among hiking, cycling and mountain bike trails, and within easy reach of a three-hectare lake for fishing and boating. The village is surrounded by vineyards if you're up for investigating the local vino; call into the tourist office for info, or ask Fiona and Alasdair for their tips on local tours. For sightseeing days, the medieval town (and Armagnac producers) of Condom can be reached in about 30 minutes, and department capital Auch in just over an hour. Closer to home, the handsome town of Montréal or Montréal-du-Gers is within 15 minutes. Other options for days out include Guinlet golf course, about 10 minutes' drive away, races and a driving school at Circuit Paul Armagnac in Nogoro (35 minutes), or the swimming and adventure park at Lac d'Aignan and boat tours and châteaux in Nérac, all within 40-45 minutes.
