  • Riverside family site 10 minutes' walk from Saint-Jean-du-Bruel
  • Lots of supervised activities like bungee jumping and paragliding
  • Outdoor pool with bar and restaurant terrace alongside
An absolute load of outdoor activities is available in the green and scenic surrounds of Camping La Dourbie in the Midi-Pyrenees – with heaps arranged by the knowledgeable site team so all you have to do is turn up. Canoeing, kayaking, canyoning, bungee jumping, paragliding, hang gliding and climbing are among the many adrenalised options to try in this land between the Cevennes and the Causses; for a more sedate time, the region's ripe for mushroom foraging or you can visit the local orchards to pick your own peaches nearby. An insect museum (oh so highly recommended) is just under an hour's drive away at Saint-Leons. As you might expect from such an action-oriented site (and area), activities are arranged around the grounds too, including a July and August kids' club and two themed evenings a week during the same time. All ages also have an outdoor pool to spend much time at, a pétanque court to challenge family members at, and a poolside terrace to lounge and cocktail at: this is where the bar/restaurant is sensibly based. A shop selling local produce is also at your convenience; sort more supplies at the village of Saint-Jean-du-Bruel, less than 10 minutes' walk away.

Local attractions

The lovely little local village of Saint-Jean-du-Bruel is crossed by the Doub river, a suitable spot for swimming and fishing as well as kayaking and canoeing. A market is held in town every Thursday. From Saint-Jean-du-Bruel, travel about 33 kilometres north-east to reach Mont Aigoual, for spectacular views from the top of its observatory tower of the Causses and the Cévennes, the Cantal mountains, the Alps, the Mediterranean and the Pyrenees. (The weather this high up is notoriously changeable, so bring a warm jacket and get ready for fast winds.) Among the deepest gorges in all of Europe, the Gorges du Tarn is just under 40 kilometres from Saint-Jean-du-Bruel. Hiking and canoeing are popular pastimes here, or you could drive around the gorge rim taking in the spectacular scenery; the views from Saint-Georges-de-Lévéjac wil make your jaw drop. To the south of the Tarn gorges are more gorgeous sites around the Gorges de la Jonte and the Gorges de la Dourbie; there's also the limestone plateau of Causse du Larzac if you want to look at yet more lovely land, and, about 40 kilometres away, the French valley town of Millau. And that insect museum? It's Micropolis, an interactive centre and play park dedicated to the small scurrying critters everyone loves: whatever your own view of this, the kids should have a riot running around here.
