It's free, quick and easy!
- Family-friendly site in the Aveyron with pool and mountain views
- Bar and restaurant on site; under five minutes' drive to Najac village
- Activity centre with zipwire, kayaking, bike hire and climbing
What a view. Plenty of places have a hill or a river to look at: this one’s got a river, a hill and on top of the hill, a 12th-century fortress surrounded by a timbered village that looks even older.
You may get a crick in your neck at Camping le Païsserou just staring up at your surrounds: this is deep Midi-Pyrénnées territory, with thickly wooded mountains and massive gorges, as well as clear rivers to explore and ancient towns clinging to the rock for you to peer up at. Venture out into the surroundings with ease from here; there’s an activity centre next to the site.
And what a site it is… Right by the Aveyron river, this is a lovely, shaded and well-looked after spot, with an outdoor pool (open from mid-June to early September) and a restaurant open all day. Families have got pretty much everything they need here, with an on-site laundry, a play area for kids who can be prised out of the pool, and a games room.
Next door, the activity centre has many an opportunity for high energy antics: you can zip over the river on a rope slide, kayak or raft your way down it, fish your dinner out of it, or mountain bike along it. Or head to Bor et Bar (20 minutes’ drive), where the friendly folk there will show you how to climb a mountain.

Local attractions
Walkers are well sorted round here with eight cracking routes in the area around Najac’s village and fortress, three of them starting from the site; even the 20-minute ramble (or under five-minute drive) into Najac itself is a stunner. Then there's the village, a friendly but ancient settlement perched over the gorge with gorgeous views all round and some fab local treats to be found in its shops.
If you want to head further afield Cahors (an hour and 10 minutes’ drive) comes highly recommended: the medieval bridge and town are well worth exploring, the deep red local vino worth sipping, and the museums (one devoted to the wartime resistance) a top spot for historic wanders.
A little further off, Toulouse an hour and 40 minutes away is the city most French people say they’d like to move to. (They haven’t yet though, making this ‘pink city’ of terracotta buildings, pretty squares and jolly bars a breeze to wander about.) Take a boat ride down the canal, sample the sausages, then buy some for yourself at the massive and brilliant foodie mecca that is Marché Victor Hugo.
Bridge buffs meanwhile shouldn't miss a trip to the Millau Viaduct (an hour and 50 minutes), the highest bridge in the world. Boats from Creseilles take you right under it; a fine ride even for non-bridge buffs.
