Relax among the trees

  • Peaceful woodland pitches at a hillside estate with Pyrenees views
  • Foix Castle half an hour's drive; an hour to Toulouse
  • Outdoor swimming pool, play area and café/restaurant on site
What a lovely spot for a rural break in the Ariège countryside – Villa Mayari is a small-scale site that’s part of a seven-acre countryside estate on a hillside with views towards the Pyrenees. When you come along here you’ll be staying at an eco-friendly place that’s home to a flock of chickens and a veg garden and which runs on renewable energy and water-recovery systems. It’s a peaceful place indeed, but also one that’s easily accessed – it’s just off the main road from the village of Escosse, about a mile away. The pitches here are spacious and quiet, thanks to their setting in the forest, with mature trees providing plenty of privacy and shade. Setting up camp in the woods also means you’ll be in prime position to spot some of the wildlife that lives here, and to listen to the soothing sounds of the birds singing in the trees throughout the day. This is a laidback kind of place, rather than one with heaps of entertainments on site, but guests have access to a lovely open-air pool and there’s a play area for the kids. The café opens throughout the summer for breakfasts, ice creams and drinks, along with homemade evening meals on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays. You’ll also be able to cook your alfresco meals on the site’s barbecue grills.

Power optional grass and earth campsite

Liked: The woodland setting is lovely and the owners clearly put a lot of thought into the project. The pitch was big and flat, and even the quieter corners of the site have electric hookups.

Disliked: We stayed in high season and it was pretty busy. It wasn’t as quiet as I had envisaged.
It would be nice to have it car free during the night (say after 11 til 7am?)
Maybe a small epicerie stock? ..on a Sunday/Monday it seemed an unnecessary car journey from food shops. I attach photo of the one from our next campsite .
