- Nature reserve, museum and one-hectare play area all on site
- Pool, sundeck, library, sports areas and local produce tastings
Such spectacular views... and as former guests have noted, such a splendid site. Camping La Serre is a roomy, serene and green place on four and a half hectares, 450 metres above sea level in a peaceful part of the Ariège department.
Your splendid – and award-winning – green space overlooks the Pyrenees and the Cathar castle of the Château de Montségur, among marked valley trails for hiking, cycling and mountain biking. But you may decide to stay on site, with all the leisurely options at your disposal, or to wander around the viewsome wildlife haven grounds among the butterflies and bees of the marked nature reserve...
Also on site are a nature library and tourist info leaflets in reception, a restaurant for eats and a food shop for supplies, and – how splendid – an eco museum covering local farming methods in rural France throughout the years. Regular events are arranged in summer, including eco-tourism days and evenings of local produce tasting with goods and visits from local farmers.
Your other leisurely pursuits could include a session at the pool, then rousing yourself to up your energy levels at one of the many sporty parts of the grounds: badminton, volleyball, table tennis, table football, pétanque, a football pitch and a mountain bike trail are all around to pick from. A fab play area covering a full hectare of space is around for the kids.
For more supplies and peaceful wanders, the village of Aigues-Vives is within a few minutes' stroll and the medieval town of Mirepoix is 10 minutes' drive away.

Local attractions
This lush land has loads to do in its mountainous surrounds, from rambling around the local castles to whizzing around the many nearby mountain bike routes. Marked trails for hiking and cycling are around the valley, including a nearby greenway biking path.
Fans of old piles should make their way first to the spectacular ruins of the Château de Montségur, a hilltop fortress hailed as the most famed of all the Cathar castles (it was the last Cathar stronghold, which finally fell after a 10-month siege in 1244). The castle and its accompanying museum, in the nearby village of Montségur, are both open to the public. Another famed Cathar castle, the Château de Foix, is 45 minutes' drive to the west.
See also the old medieval town of Mirepoix with the 13th-centruy Saint-Maurice Cathedral which has the second biggest Gothic arch in Europe (after the cathedral in Spain's Girona). To delve much further back in time, take the kids for a megasaurus day at Parc de la Préhistoire in Tarascon, 40 minutes' drive from the site.
