How do you like your setting when on your French hols? Peaceful? Green? Right next to a river? Have all three with a stay at Camping de la Gartempe.
You'll have direct access to the calm waters of the Gartempe river from here, for paddles, fishing and lazes alongside, as well as spectacular views of the water from the site and superly easy access to the beaut surrounds of the Gartempe and Semme valleys primed for exploring on foot, by bike or by mountain bike. Heading 15 minutes south, heaps of leisure options are at Saint-Pardoux’s lake, with an indoor pool, a treetop adventure park, a beach and water-based pursuits like paddleboarding, canoeing, kayaking and sailing.
Châteauponsac, also known locally as Château Lorraine, is in the sparsely populated Limousin region, just over half an hour’s drive from Limoges. The village looks scenically over the valley, and in it is a Benedictine priory housing the René-Baubérot museum, which showcases everything from local arts and crafts to archaeological exhibits and reconstructions of traditional Limousin interiors.
The site’s accommodation areas are well laid out across terraces in a highly serene and green setting; plenty has been laid on for kids and spells of gentle activity, including a spacious playground, a games room with a ping pong table and a TV to lounge in front of, as well as a miniature golf course and a pétanque pitch. If you reserve in advance, you can also book a spell in the on-site jacuzzi.
To sort your eats there’s a snack bar, a small grocery store and a freshly baked bread service, supplies from which can be scoffed the pretty picnic area or back at your pitch. Otherwise, head to the supermarket at the top of the hill nearby or venture to sample the region’s gastronomy around the local village.

Châteauponsac’s René-Baubérot museum is a splendid spot to delve into the region’s history at: explore archaeological exhibits and reconstructions of traditional Limousin interiors, as well as local arts and crafts too.
Heading 15 minutes south by car, venture to get sporty on the water at Saint-Pardoux’s leisure base: paddleboarding, canoeing and kayaking and sailing are all available here, as well as swimming in the indoor pool or monkeying around in the treetop adventure park. If you’re of a rather more lazy persuasion, bring your beach towel and sunscreen and stretch out on the sands of the lovely lake beach.
Within an hour’s drive you can reach Limoges, the martyred village of Oradour Sur Glane and Reynou Zoo.
