  • Family site on 47 hectares of gardens and woodlands
  • Within 20 minutes of Limoges and a lakeside beach
  • Pool, volleyball, fishing, games room, play area and restaurant
Well now, this is really rather pretty. Camping du Château de Leychoisier is a green and peaceful place set on 47 hectares of gardens and woodlands, around a medieval fortress shaded by centenarian lime trees and sequoias… and close to more pretty sights in Limoges, a French Town of Art and History, 15 kilometres away. Walks, mountain biking and quad trails are all available nearby, and it’s about 20 minutes’ drive from here to the sandy beach and nearby sailing centre of Lac Saint-Pardoux. Fittingly as there’s so much space, a good variety of leisure facilities are on site to keep all occupied in these scenic surroundings: the outdoor pool is open throughout the season unless the weather is unmannerly; there’s a volleyball court at your disposal as well; and a pétanque court is on site too (this last is a team fave, so do give it a go while here). Not quite enough for you? Miniature golf, ping pong, fishing, a play area and a games room are also around to entertain your regal selves, along with plentiful amenities including showers and toilets, a washing-up area, a launderette and a parent and baby washroom. There’s a shop selling groceries and local produce, but you may prefer to glide grandly towards the site restaurant for your eats and drinks instead; having one’s dinner made for one is much more fitting for a French château stay…

What customers say

This campsite is lauded for its beautiful, tranquil woodland setting on stunning chateau grounds with spacious, shaded pitches. Guests enjoyed the friendly staff and lovely pool. However, many noted dated facilities, particularly toilets/showers needing refurbishment, with some experiencing hot water/cleanliness issues. The restaurant was often closed or limited, and some found it overpriced given these drawbacks. Poor lighting to facilities was also mentioned.

Liked If you're looking for the usual French campsite, then this probably isn't the place for you. But if you're after something authentically French, head to Château de Leychoisier, just outside Limoges. This isn’t your typical commercial holiday park – it’s a stay steeped in history and charm. The château itself dates back as far as 1361, with parts of the current structure likely built in the 15th century. It has passed through the hands of several notable families and was even the backdrop to a dramatic Revolutionary-era rescue. The grounds were landscaped in 1861 by the famous French designer Paul de Lavenne de Choulot.

Everything here feels rooted in the French countryside – including the reception. Don’t expect an English-speaking student on a summer job; you’ll be greeted in French, and that’s all part of the experience. It’s a genuine slice of rural France, and all the more special for it.

For nature lovers, this place is a real delight. The château is surrounded by unspoilt forests and tranquil lakes, with trees so well established they seem to be reseeding themselves naturally. There are no marked trails – you simply find your own path, which is exactly the joy of being here. After a light rain, we set off for a walk and, for the first time on our French road trip, felt we were truly in the heart of the country.

There’s also a swimming pool on site, which looked lovely, though we opted instead for the forest walks. I would highly recommend Château de Leychoisier for anyone seeking a peaceful, deeply French retreat that connects you with both nature and history.

Liked Location

Disliked Facilities were very poor and need updating. Couldn't get any hot water and there is no where to eat within walking distance. Furthermore the gates were shut at 7 so you could not come and go even on foot.

Local attractions

It’s less than 20 minutes’ drive from here to the famed porcelain city of Limoges, known for its fine ceramics as well as its 10th-century Crypt of Saint Martial, the 13th-century cathedral and the botanical gardens. If you think the kids might manage it, the city’s fine arts museum in the 18th-century bishops' palace is also a top spot to stop off at. Several other villages in the region are well worth a look: try St Léonard de Noblat, 35 minutes’ drive away, Mortemart and Montrol Sénard (both 45 minutes), and the settlement of Oradour-sur-Glane, destroyed during a massacre in World War II and subsequently rebuilt on the orders of C la Gaulle. A museum and monument are here to mark the event. Drive about 25 minutes from your château site to reach another castle at Parc du Reynou, home to a wildlife park housing hundreds of animals from around 130 species, including panthers, giraffes and the smallest monkey in the world, the pygmy ouistiti.
