As well as all the watery pursuits down on the lake, you can challenge the kids to mini golf at Vauveix or go pony trekking through the wooded countryside (both 10 minutes’ drive). Chabrières Forest (40 minutes) is a handy place to tire out young kids on woodland walks to weird rock formations, and there are more testing hikes to be had in Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park (about an hour). If the kids are into their wildlife, they’ll relish the chance to see semi-feral wolves in their natural environment at Les Loups de Chabrières (55 minutes); they can also pet friendly llamas at the Ferme Les Clautres (an hour). For cultural days out, there are several castles to see locally: Villemonteix (also an hour) is known for its sumptuous interiors and priceless tapestries, while Château de Boussac (an hour and a half) is open for guided tours of its medieval interior. The cathedral, porcelain museums and old cobbled centre of Limoges are roughly an hour away, while thought-provoking Oradour-sur-Glane (an hour and half) is a slowly decaying memorial dedicated to the victims of a World War II massacre.
