How does a spot of forest bathing sound for your next holiday? Imagine your worries and stresses fading away as you plunge yourself within the rejuvenating embrace of spectacularly lush woodland… Well, the good news is that you don’t have to imagine: all that can be yours at peaceful Camping Montard. This site (easily accessed from the D20 road) occupies the lower western slopes of the Forêt de Montard, in the Corrèze department of central France. And do you know who else rejoices among these green surroundings? Your canine companion, who will likely be only too happy to follow you on an exploration of the hills. After bathing in the forest, you might well fancy bathing in the waters of the nearby lake, the Plan d’eau des Forges (less than five minutes’ walk). Besides swimming (which is supervised in the afternoons in July and August), the lake area has floating inflatable structures, plus paddleboards and pedal boats for rent. Child-friendly entertainment on shore includes a playground, a miniature golf course and pétanque courts. Back on site after an activity-filled day, you can freshen up for the evening in the well-maintained toilet block (with hot-water showers) and throw any laundry in the washing machine. Then it’s all about sourcing food, which you can do easily enough at the on-site restaurant. Owners René and Floortje also run a daily bread service (July–August), though should you forget to pre-order your baguette in the evening, there’s a bakery (and a small store) in the village of Masseret (five minutes’ drive).

Service in the cafe

Disliked Having to supply own toilet rolls, no handwashing soap so using toilet and transferring germs to door handles?

Breakfast wasn't as nice as evening meal

Site most expensive one we stayed at in France

Electricity cuts out when electric blanket
Plugged in even though only fridge was plugged in

Hard to get around in a wheelchair due to tree roots or shingle

Powered grass and earth campsite

Liked We used this site as a winter stop over on our way to Spain. It had all we needed - hot shower, clean facilities and a firm pitch.

It’s turned out to be quite an atmospheric place to stay - partly due to us being the only guests that night in a pretty spooky forest, and partly due to the light show from the adjoining restaurant (which lit up the whole forest and made it feel like a scene from the x files).

Looks like a lovely site for summer - we’d love to return then.

Disliked Nothing

Local attractions

The Arboretum de Chamberet (20 minutes’ drive), within the Parc naturel régional de Millevaches en Limousin, has self-guided botanical trails and workshops, including some on how to make cider (from the dozens of apple varieties that grow on site) and wooden clogs. There is also a wildlife garden and a deer park. Limoges (35 minutes) is renowned for its porcelain, and you can view some exquisite pieces – from delicate vases to extravagantly decorated clocks – at the Musée national Adrien Dubouché. After your visit, grab something to eat (and stock up on edible souvenirs) at the Halles centrales. Brive-la-Gaillarde (40 minutes) spreads out from the Collégiale Saint-Martin, a Romanesque cathedral with an interior of imposing stone pillars. In the summer months, the surrounding streets are hung with colourful umbrellas that make a pretty background for a selfie. Displays at the Labenche Museum of Art and History span from the prehistory of the region to the Nazi era.
