Wow, this is quite the spectacular spot… If you’re looking for mountain views and some considerable luxury in your accommodation, get set for your stay at Les Cabanes d’ErbeFol. Here, owners Fabien and Eloïse will welcome you to their stylish hillside nirvana, managed sustainably with an emphasis on reconnecting with nature.
Tucked among trees on the outskirts of the rural Pyrénées-Orientales village of Ansignan, the upcycled units (all built on site) have stylish, colourful interiors dotted with antiques, and private decking with far-reaching views of forested peaks in the Eastern Pyrenees.
Breakfast baskets and aperitif boards featuring local wines and olive oils (both are also sold on site) can be reserved in advance, while a baker stops daily in Ansignan for you to pick up baguettes and fresh pastries – and there’s also a twice-weekly grocery truck where you can replenish supplies. Alternatively, utilise the shared summer kitchen (with a fridge, hob and grill) at reception, and hang out at ‘guinguette’ area to chill, meet new pals, perhaps share a snack or listen to music.
Travelling with kids in tow? Pack them off to the small playground next to the summer kitchen, and keep an eye on them as you chat over a glass of wine. Books and board games are also available to borrow for downtime with family or friends.

Local attractions
If you choose to abandon the car, there’s much to occupy you around Les Cabanes d’ErbeFol. Stroll into the village of Ansignan to see the ancient Roman gateway, or have a meander along the Agly River to the stone arches of the Pont-Aqueduc d’Ansignan (20 minutes’ walk), built in the third century to carry water to crop fields. Here you can cool off with a dip in the river.
For more adventurous pursuits, cycle to the Gorges of Saint-Jaume (an hour by bike) and then walk the looped trail through the ravine, passing waterfalls and viewing points along the way. If you fancy testing your head for heights, try out the via ferrata rock-climbing courses (10 minutes’ drive) in Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet; there are trails suitable for all levels of ability.
Slightly further afield, striking Cathar castles wend their way across the Pyréneés foothills; start your exploration of these medieval defence fortresses at Château de Quéribus (half an hour), where you can walk around the three rings of ramparts. Also close by is the landmark Château de Peyrepertuse (50 minutes), standing on a limestone bluff and accessible by a steep path.
