- Friendly Lozère site with gorgeous views over the Gorges du Tarn
- A 10-minute drive from the Tarn river for swimming and canoeing
- Café, bar, kitchen facilities and accessible bathrooms
Hiking, mountain biking, canoeing, wild swimming, climbing… they're all here around the Gorges du Tarn. And if you want to be in prime position for all these activities, take a look at Camping Aux Portes du Sauveterre, in a fabulous spot overlooking the gorges.
This friendly Lozère site is in the tiny village of Saint-Rome-de-Dolan, at an altitude of 850 metres between Les Vignes and Massegros Causses Gorges (both 10 minutes' drive). Pitches are marked out by hedges for privacy and shade, and the whole place is filled with greenery to help guests feel immersed in the natural scenery.
That location makes this an excellent base for all sorts of active days out – there are hiking trails running from the village to get you started, and plenty more around the Aubrac plateau (about 45 minutes' drive away). Meanwhile, the Tarn river is about 10 minutes' drive away for swimming, fishing and watersports. And in between all those adventures, you can mix in laidback days visiting caves and animal parks or seeking out local produce in nearby villages.
Back at base, there’s a peaceful atmosphere that favours simple facilities like a play area and pétanque court over lots of noisy entertainments. A café, a bar, a small shop and a bread service are on hand for easy eats and drinks, and there's also a common room with fridge, microwave, kettle, toaster and coffee maker, plus a TV and tables and chairs. A launderette and wifi service are also on site, and the bathrooms have been nicely designed with fully accessible facilities.

Local attractions
There’s some stunning scenery around here so you're bound to want to be out and about exploring. That might involve walking one of the paths running from the village or perhaps picking up the Saint-Guilhem Trail, which passes a couple of kilometres away. The team on site can recommend mountain bike trails and climbing spots too, or canoe hire firms for outings on the Tarn (10 minutes’ drive) where you can also swim or fish.
Ready to dial the pace down a little? Glide across the water on a small boat trip from La Malène (25 minutes) or opt for a gentle wander around a local village – Sévérac-le-Château (15 minutes) is a particularly pretty pick. There's also the option of a funicular ride into the depths of Aven Armand (40 minutes) to see the colourfully lit rock formations.
Got animal-loving kids on board? Take a visit to Europe's largest wolf pack at Les Loups du Gévaudan (45 minutes) or learn all about big birds at Maison des Vautours (half an hour).
