  • On the banks of the Ardèche 45 minutes from Vallon-Pont-d'Arc
  • Get picked up on site for canoe trips under the Pont d'Arc
  • Private beach, miniature golf and restaurant with roomy terrace
If you venture towards France's Occitanie region, and from there inwards to the Gard department… and then to Saint-Julien-de-Peyrolas, you'll be in the land of the Ardèche river, flowing for 125 kilometres along its lush and craggy valley. And close to Saint-Julien-de-Peyrolas and along the river's scenic meander is Camping Le Peyrolais, a well-appointed place in with loads to do on site as well as off. For example, you might like to know there's a private grassy beach directly accessible from the grounds for days of sunbathing, canoeing and dips to cool off under the southern French sun…? Off site, this chunk of the Gard is 45 minutes' drive from Vallon-Pont-d'Arc and the entrance to the Ardèche via the spectacular Pont D'Arc arch, 15 minutes from Saint-Martin-d'Ardèche to reach the gorges from their southern side, and among caves and caverns for subterranean exploring (the Chauvet caves are within 45 minutes). You might also like to know that there's enough to do to back at base to keep kids busy all the day long… A playground with swings, slides, climbing and a bouncy castle should see them nicely started, and the miniature golf, basketball, volleyball, badminton and games room can keep them occupied until they're suitably worn out. And then? Take your now tired kids to sit quietly (ha) for dinner at the restaurant, where guests of all sizes can tuck into homemade nosh such as paella, steak and fried mussels.

Local attractions

Plenty of scenic strolls and bike rides are in the site surrounds, but if you're in this part of the world you'll probably want to zip along as soon as poss to the famed Ardèche gorges, so lush and well known that they're nicknamed Europe's Grand Canyon. Canoeing along the river and under the spectacular arch of the Pont d'Arc is the best (some say only) way to access the gorges: you can arrange a tour in the neighbouring town of Vallon Pont d'Arc, or ask at the Camping Le Peyrolais reception for details of canoe hire companies that can pick you up at the site and drop you off later. Close to Vallon are the Chauvet or Chauvet-Pont-d'Arc caves, acclaimed as having some of the best preserved prehistoric paintings in the world. To prevent damage to the paintings, the caves aren't open to the public, but visitors can – and should – wander around the huge replica of the caverns on site instead.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Friendly people, facilities and pitch sizes. Nice bar/restaurant. Bit of a language barrier but we managed with our small amount of french and some help from a translation app.

Disliked: Could do with some tidying of the trees as some pitches difficult to get to without scratching the trees on the motorhome.
