It's free, quick and easy!
- Friendly, spacious riverside campsite in the Gard department
- An hour's drive from Nîmes and Montpellier; Anduze 20 minutes
- Outdoor pool, private river access, badminton, fishing and playground
In the business of beaching yourself on the banks of a sleepy Cévennes river? Then you stand a good chance of liking Camping La Salendrinque, a peaceful waterside park in southern France's gorgeous Gard department.
This terraced site is spread out over spacious grounds where you'll come across a mix of shaded woodlands, a small waterfall, well-maintained garden areas and lots of wildlife. And, as it's sandwiched between the Mediterranean sea and Ardèche's gorges, Camping La Salendrinque makes a top strategic base for exploring other inviting landscapes further afield.
The site is about a kilometre from the centre of Lasalle, a small village where you have access to grocery stores, a pharmacy and a bakery. Slightly (but not much) further away is the medium-sized town of Anduze (20 minutes' drive), a pretty place at the foot of the Cévennes that’s bordered by a pair of spectacular rock formations.
Back at base, Camping La Salendrinque can sort you out with swimming – either in an outdoor heated pool or in the river – as well as other sports like badminton or fishing (you'll need a permit – check with site staff for details). It shouldn't prove too hard to keep the kids entertained here, as Camping La Salendrinque has an indoor games room and an outdoor play area for school-age guests.

Local attractions
For a taste of the region, get up early and head to local markets at Anduze (20 minutes' drive) or Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort (15 minutes) to try local delicacies like Pélardon cheese, chestnuts, sweet Cévennes onions or fine and fruity wines. For more universally-recognised flavours, you're also about an hour's drive from the Haribo Museum, just south of the city of Uzès.
For fans of flora and plant life, endless excursions can be planned from Camping La Salendrinque – Anduze's unusual bamboo forest is a quarter of an hour away, but you could just as easily seek out solace among the zen surrounds of Le Jardin des Sambucs (45 minutes) or in Montpellier's handsome and historic botanical gardens (an hour), one of the oldest in Europe. The Roman city of Nîmes (an hour) is also worth visiting for its combination of ancient ruins and well-tended public parks.
If it's natural beauty you're after, the hills and valleys of the surrounding Cévennes National Park will sort you out nicely. The views are particularly attractive from vantage points like the Château de Portes (an hour) and Cirque de Navacelles (an hour and 10 minutes).
