Time to escape from everyday life? You should really be able to relax and recharge at La Colline Vagabonde – this Gard site is reserved for adults only, and it keeps guest numbers very low to ensure plenty of fabulous rural peace and space for everyone.
Situated within the Cévennes National Park, at an altitude of 250 metres and close to the banks of the Luech river, this is a very scenic and quiet spot that’s often described by chilled-out guests as ‘out of this world’. Sitting on a hill above the hamlet of Chamboredon, it’s got a true secluded vibe, but is actually fairly easily accessible via the D29 so you’ll be able to get out and about to explore the area, or pick things up from the shops 10 kilometres away.
That national park setting also means that the owners have put a lot of effort into making their place eco friendly – in fact they constructed all the accommodation themselves, taking time to make it all comfortable as well as simple and sustainable. Each one has been set up in its own private little spot, with beds and furnishings inside and plenty of space to relax in the tent or out in your own little outdoor area. Shared facilities include a kitchen and bathroom, and breakfast is included in the cost of your stay for a great start to the day.
After breakfast, what next? Well, there’s plenty of scope for hiking, mountain biking, kayaking and other outdoor activities… or you might just like to take it easy around the site, soaking up the gorgeous views and strolling down the private path to the river for a dip.

Route directions
Sat navs will offer you different routes. If you're arriving from the east and prefer to stick to main roads, go through Saint-Ambroix (30). The other routes often take you down some quite narrow roads (although they are very scenic).
When you see the Chamboredon sign on the D29, a little way along the road you will see a recycling area on the side of the road; take the road opposite and continue on until you get to two speed bumps and then a concrete path going up on the left.

Local attractions
This part of the Cévennes National Park has yet to be discovered by most tourists – and that’s a bonus for guests at La Colline Vagabonde, as it means lots of quiet hiking trails and very little development to disturb the views up into the starry skies at night (this area has been designated an International Dark Sky Reserve).
As well as the hiking trails around the site and mountain biking through local beech forests, there’s also the option of heading to Villefort Lake (40 minutes’ drive) for kayaking, via ferrata climbing and a lakeside lunch. Alternatively, you could head underground to explore the subterranean scenery of Grotte de la Cocalière (half an hour).
Elsewhere in the area, you can visit the 11th-century Château de Portes (25 minutes), learning about the area’s industrial heritage at La Maison du Mineur (half an hour) or wander among more than 1000 species of bamboo at La Bambouseraie en Cévennes (55 minutes).
