  • Peaceful 10-hectare site on the banks of the Seine in Les Andelys
  • A 25-minute drive from Monet's garden at Giverny and 50 from Rouen
  • Pool, playground, fishing lake, bike hire and bar-restaurant
Well, if it's good enough for three kings, that sounds like a fine start, non? If any royals did indeed happen upon Camping L'Île des Trois Rois they’d surely find the location most pleasing, for this 10-hectare site is in a stunning spot on the banks of the Seine river and a leisurely 10-minute stroll from the shops and restaurants of Les Andelys (eats an easy walk away being a real bonus if you’re wearing velvet robes… or taking the small sorts out for a crêpe). The good life awaits for all guests here, princely background or not – days on site can be spent fishing/daydreaming by the river or fishing lake, swimming in the heated pool, perfecting your pétanque pitch or playing games of badminton and table tennis. Pint-sized princes and princesses have been given their own castle to play in – a giant inflatable one whose estate includes a decent amount of playground kit too. In summer, you can source eats and drinks on site at the bar-restaurant, then stick around to strut your stuff at one of the dance evenings. For other foodie demands, you may like to hire a bike on site to pedal up to town; you can also use it for bit of riverside roaming along the scenic cycle path that skirts the side of the Seine.

Liked We loved the facilities, especially the heated pool. It was an overcast evening when we arrived but because the pool was heated we could still enjoy an evening swim. The location is beautiful with views of the castle, the river and the bridge. Nice pitch and we were happy to find that our request of a shady pitch was granted. The music the campsite put on in the evening was excellent and we enjoyed listening to it

Disliked The campsite was very noisy until about 2.30am with lots of shouting which wasn’t great when we were tired from a long drive.

Liked - Beautiful surroundings, views were stunning
- Amazing facilities for children, the pool and play areas were a hit
- Showers, best we've seen in a campsite this year
- Really peaceful vibes during the day, very relaxed
- Great location, half hour from Monet's garden (must see) and Rouen Art Gallery, 50 minute drive away.

Disliked - The awful and loud euro-trash DJ/rave music starting at 11.30 at night till 1am (not family friendly), in the marquee behind reception that kept me awake (our pitch was not close either) will be the sole reason I'll never return. What is odd, is that the campsite itself is dead silent at this time of night and this was the only noise... There was literally a small group of people in the marquee (I had a look on my way to the loo one night thinking the whole campsite must be in there). We stayed 2 nights and this happened both nights, a Thursday and Friday.

Liked We had a truly wonderful stay at this campsite. The setting is beautiful, with amazing views of the Seine River and a lake where wildlife is in abundance. From our pitch we enjoyed watching beavers, kingfishers, dragonflies, and even a magnificent heron coming and going from its nest.

The site itself is exceptionally clean and peaceful, with fantastic facilities for both adults and children. There are three excellent swimming pools, a large park and bouncy castles for the kids, plus a spacious bar area with games. The bar and restaurant are reasonably priced, and the staff there — as well as the park staff in general — were always helpful, friendly, and positive.

The pitches are a very good size and comfortably meet everyone’s needs. The location is ideal for exploring the region; we visited Monet’s garden and house, which was a real highlight, and we are already planning to return to discover more of this beautiful area.

Overall, this campsite exceeded our expectations in every way — highly recommended.

Disliked Nothing at all.

Local attractions

If in any doubt about the top local attraction, look up: Château Gaillard towers over the place from 90 metres up, as it has since the late 12th century. It's all in ruins now, but very much worth the hike up for some splendid views over the Seine. There are several more handsome historic buildings around town if you fancy taking a tour, and the World War II-themed Musée De Tosny is a five-minute drive away on the other side of the river. History’s seen a long list of famed names come this way for artistic inspiration – if you're in need of a little of that, plot a course for Lyons-la-Forêt (25 minutes' drive), a pretty little village that’s provided fodder for Renoir’s paintings and Ravel’s music. Anyone who’s ever admired Monet’s paintings of water lilies won’t want to miss a trip to Giverny (25 minutes) to see the gorgeous gardens in real life. Vernon (20 minutes) and Rouen (50 minutes) are also worth a trip for those that can't get enough of the history of the hereabouts. Should the nippers be tiring of such outings, venture to Val-de-Reuil (half an hour) for a zoo, an indoor play park and a lake with beach and watersports centre.
