  • Peaceful 10-hectare site on the banks of the Seine in Les Andelys
  • A 25-minute drive from Monet's garden at Giverny and 50 from Rouen
  • Pool, playground, fishing lake, bike hire and bar-restaurant
Well, if it's good enough for three kings, that sounds like a fine start, non? If any royals did indeed happen upon Camping L'Île des Trois Rois they’d surely find the location most pleasing, for this 10-hectare site is in a stunning spot on the banks of the Seine river and a leisurely 10-minute stroll from the shops and restaurants of Les Andelys (eats an easy walk away being a real bonus if you’re wearing velvet robes… or taking the small sorts out for a crêpe). The good life awaits for all guests here, princely background or not – days on site can be spent fishing/daydreaming by the river or fishing lake, swimming in the heated pool, perfecting your pétanque pitch or playing games of badminton and table tennis. Pint-sized princes and princesses have been given their own castle to play in – a giant inflatable one whose estate includes a decent amount of playground kit too. In summer, you can source eats and drinks on site at the bar-restaurant, then stick around to strut your stuff at one of the dance evenings. For other foodie demands, you may like to hire a bike on site to pedal up to town; you can also use it for bit of riverside roaming along the scenic cycle path that skirts the side of the Seine.

Liked Beautiful scenery and beautiful village 10 mins walk away. Some pitches looked lovely. We were put in a grass field with no option to have an actual pitch but plenty were empty. Guess this is my fault for booking the basic grass pitch but would have liked the option to upgrade after we arrived.

Disliked Pool extremely busy and cold! Showers also cold!

Liked We liked everything. The pitch was a very good size for our large tent and backed on to the lake which was very scenic. The staff were great, and the food in the bar was lovely. We enjoyed the weekend entertainment too, and the pool for our daughter.

Disliked Could maybe do something less expensive with the site Wifi but that's a really small point

Liked Size of pitch, hedged borders great idea. Plenty for kids to do, play areas and inflatables. Both pools well kept. Nice and tidy site.

Disliked A little noisy Friday and Saturday nights with music on til 1am. Didn't lose sleep though. WiFi range wasn't the best.

Powered grass campsite (privilege, riverside)

Liked Swimming pool, children’s bouncy castles and play areas. Location.

Disliked Showers were either cold or scolding (required finding staff in a towel to adjust) and the cubicles are poorly designed.

Pitches are very close together, so noise can be an issue. Toilets got dirty and ran out of paper very quickly. Some toilets had soap, some didn’t. Bar food was not great.

Local attractions

If in any doubt about the top local attraction, look up: Château Gaillard towers over the place from 90 metres up, as it has since the late 12th century. It's all in ruins now, but very much worth the hike up for some splendid views over the Seine. There are several more handsome historic buildings around town if you fancy taking a tour, and the World War II-themed Musée De Tosny is a five-minute drive away on the other side of the river. History’s seen a long list of famed names come this way for artistic inspiration – if you're in need of a little of that, plot a course for Lyons-la-Forêt (25 minutes' drive), a pretty little village that’s provided fodder for Renoir’s paintings and Ravel’s music. Anyone who’s ever admired Monet’s paintings of water lilies won’t want to miss a trip to Giverny (25 minutes) to see the gorgeous gardens in real life. Vernon (20 minutes) and Rouen (50 minutes) are also worth a trip for those that can't get enough of the history of the hereabouts. Should the nippers be tiring of such outings, venture to Val-de-Reuil (half an hour) for a zoo, an indoor play park and a lake with beach and watersports centre.
