  • Peaceful site surrounded by the hills and vineyards of Champagne
  • Within 40 minutes' drive of Reims and Épernay; an hour from Lac du Der
  • Private fishing pond, shop with fresh bread, summer kids' club
Pop… that’s one of the sounds you’ll hear while you stay at the peaceful tree-lined site of Camping de Châlons-en-Champagne. It might be shirt buttons bursting off tums stuffed with tasty local cuisine… it might be fish flying out of the site’s private fishing pond and into your net… or it could be corks for, as the name suggests, this is France’s Ardenne-Champagne region, and that’s famed for one particular tipple. The abundant trees and the fishing lake give the place a peaceful air, disguising the fact that there’s a lot going on, especially for active types. Outside there’s football, badminton and volleyball, alongside the slightly more restful attractions of miniature golf, while the games room has table tennis and table football for indoor competitors (and a TV for those who’ll have no truck with competition at all). Smaller guests are kept well occupied in the warmer months with a daily kids’ club. You can do as much or as little as you wish here: stroll over to the store for supplies, fresh bread and pastries, stop off at the snack bar for a coffee as you contemplate the day ahead, fizzing with promise. Even if you’re not fussed about the fizzy stuff, this is a fab region to explore, and Camping de Châlons-en-Champagne is a cracking good base to do it from, about 10 minutes’ drive from the town of the same name and 40 minutes from the medieval city of Reims.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Spacious flat pitches, clean suitable facilities. Pleasant staff. Generally a nice simple site. Pleasant looking cafe, though we didnt use it. Nice to be able to order a baguette and croissants for breakfast.

Well worth the 10 minute drive into the beautiful town of Chalons-en-Champagne.

Local attractions

For a quick taste (in all senses of the word) of the area’s treasures, take the 10-minute trip into Châlons-en-Champagne and visit the Maison Joseph Perrier, one of the great pop shops and still on its original 1825 premises. Vineyards and cellars are all around the region, but some of the standout experiences are in Épernay (45 minutes' drive), with a street containing nothing but champagne houses, and subterranean tunnels stretching for miles through the chalky hills. If you fancy seeing more of those hills, hire bikes in Châlons or take canoe and boat trips down the Marne; if that’s not watery enough for you, it’s an hour to the mighty Lac du Der for walks, watersports and sunbathing on the beach. There are further fizz-related treats to be found in Reims, 40 minutes’ drive away: tour the Taittinger label’s collection of three million bottles stored in the crypts of a 13th-century church, with more, 60-odd feet further down, in tunnels cut by the Romans. Up above, there’s refreshment for the soul as you wander the city’s vast Gothic cathedral and take in the peace of the 1,000-year-old basilica.
