  • Peaceful park 10 kilometres from Nigloland theme park
  • Among the Champagne vineyards in a green and quiet setting
  • Pool, sauna, bike hire, play area, games room and dino karts
Champagne, you say? In a peaceful rural setting among vineyards of sparkling quality, but also only 15 minutes' drive from the fab theme park of Nigloland… celebrate sorting family days for all ages and all bubbly tastes at Le Village de la Champagne in the Aube. It's all rather lovely at this quiet forest site, with swish accommodation set among trees and greenery, and plenty of space to find your own peacefully secluded spot. And what a lot there is to do when you emerge again into public view, whatever your holiday tastes tend towards (they should at some point, however, include a flute of the finest champagne). If your heart's desire is to stay in a placid state, there's a spa to soothe you and a heated indoor pool to submerge you; if you decide it's time to stir, this well-equipped park has a nifty selection of leisure options too including pétanque, volleyball, table tennis around the grounds, and table football, darts, books and board games in the games room. Kids will have much to make merry at, with a spacious playground to have a ball at, and dinky red dino karts available for hire to pedal around the grounds. (Bike hire is available too for self-conscious supervising grownups following at a discreet pace behind.) Free wifi is at reception for small sorts who just can't be prised from their tablets. Surrounded by hills and Champagne vineyards, the site is about 10 minutes' walk from the ancient town of Bar-sur-Aube. It's in handy setting for popping out to investigate the local wines, exploring the great lakes of the Orient forest, or having peaceful days around other towns and villages of the region such as Baroville, Fontaine, Proverville and Voigny. A market is held in Bar-sur-Aube every Saturday.

Local attractions

Both sophisticated and juvenile days are easy to get to around here, as the site is within easy reach of visits to Champagne cellars and regional wine producers, as well as to the fab Dolancourt theme park of Nigloland. (You'll need at least a couple of days for each, so do plot your time accordingly.) Local town Bar-sur-Aube is – quelle surprise – on the Aube river, on a section of its 248-kilometre meander from the Langres plateau in the Haute-Marne to where it flows into the Seine near Marcilly-sur-Seine in Marne. Gentle riverside walks are a top way to spend an easygoing day, but if it's famed watery bodies you want in the region, get along to the dense woodlands of the Forêt d'Orient Regional Nature Park: it has around half of the Champagne-Ardenne's 10,000 or so hectares of watery bodies. The best known and biggest lake in the forest is Lac d'Orient, at 2,500 hectares. It's a highly popular place for sailing, wild swimming (with several dedicated bathing areas) and birdwatching, as it's the main reserve of the woodland. For fishing, try Lake Temple, and for adrenalised days, zip along to Lake Amance, the forest lake place for powerboating activities such as waterskiing. For a till ringing day, visit the factory outlets and many other shops of department capital Troyes, 50 minutes' drive away.
