General

  • Family-friendly site on the banks of the River Loire
  • Half an hour’s drive from Orleans; two hours to Paris
  • Bike rental on site; beach, pool and tennis within five-minute walk

Where possible, hols should be a feast for the senses as well as the spirit, with days spent soaking up pretty vistas while minds distance themselves from real life. If that sounds like what you’re craving, make your way to Camping L’Isle aux Moulins, a family-friendly site in the Centre region town of Jargeau – your eyes will thank you.

This is the stunningly scenic Loire Valley, so lengthy explores are a must: travel among beaucoup de châteaux in the car, row along to one of the neighbouring towns for boat, canoe or kayak trips on the river, or clamber into the saddle (rent bikes on site) to get started on the 800-kilometre Loire à Velo cycle path, which passes right by the site entrance.

If a more sedate getaway is needed, there’s no need to travel far – there’s a sandy beach to laze on, an indoor pool to float serenely in and public tennis courts for a little exercise all within five minutes’ walk, and a pétanque court on site when even that much walking simply won’t do.

Sticking around site comes highly recommended during high season, when kids can get in some outdoor play while grownups snooze in the shade, and evening time brings entertainment with it. Peckish moments can be dealt with by trotting along to reception to nab fresh bread and pastries or an ice cream, and there are plenty of shops and restaurants in Jargeau to satisfy more substantial appetites for local eats.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

The campsite was in a lovely setting, with pitches amongst the trees. The shower and toilet block was immaculate- very clean. It was also relatively well situated not being too far from any point of the campsite. Walking off and around site was also really nice with the river and small beach nearby. The nearby village is also nice.

We arrived a little late, just after 7pm but after a quick ring they were happy to stay and check us in (as 7pm is the latest time).

    Disliked:

Not much to dislike about this campsite. There is no toilet roll in the toilets but this can be easily solved by just putting some in your shower bag/pocket. The pitches don’t offer much privacy but again, experienced campers with windbreaks can easily solve this. It’s also not too much of a big deal but it is nice to know.

Location- Five minute walk to the town (would only stay again due to the location, this would not be our first choice).
Laundry services with ironing board (if you needed one).

    Disliked:

Difficult to find from sat nav directions, could do with more signage.
Pitches not really defined/ secluded and rough, uneven.
Reception not completely helpful on arrival, didn’t explain anything to us.
Washing facilities untidy, showers had a lot of insects.

Lovey staff with great English that helped us massively. Right near the river with a sandy area where we could play sports. Perfect location as Orléans is only 30 mins away which was great for a day trip. Secluded area at the back where we could have the whole pitch to ourselves and not worrying about bothering other campers.

Great site if a little basic - with the Loire in view and minutes into the village. The owners met us at the gate and were more than helpful, with great prices on nice cold beers in the heat!

    Disliked:

Learnt quickly that some sites don't have soap and toilet paper - would have been nice to know in advance.

Directions

Local attractions

Start with a wander around Jargeau’s historical centre, following in the steps of Joan of Arc and Dauphin Charles VII, who attacked the town in the 15th century, then keep feet in the past with stops at the Oscar Roty museum to learn about the famous La Semeuse and at Musée Maurice Genevoix to see collections of rare books, drawings and songs by the writer.

Leave museums behind for a spell outdoors with Loire walks and nature workshops at the Maison de Loire ecomuseum in Jargeau, trips to the Parc Floral de la Source and Arboretum des Grandes Bruyères, 20 minutes’ drive from base, and jaunts into the Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Nature Park an hour and a half away.

And as this is the Loire, châteaux won’t be hard to find… Chamerolles, Sully-sur-Loire, Chambord, Gien, Saint-Brisson-sur-Loire, Blancafort and Meung-sur-Loire are all within an hour, and dozens more not much farther – there’s even a theme park full of châteaux miniatures an hour and a half away if travelling to each and every one isn’t possible.

For urban days, the half-hour drive to Orleans is highly recommended for adventure parks, museums, galleries and theatres – for something grander, Paris is two hours away.
