Where possible, holidays should be a feast for the senses as well as the spirit, with days spent soaking up pretty vistas while minds distance themselves from real life. If that sounds like what you’re craving, make your way to Camping L’Isle aux Moulins, a family-friendly site in the Centre region town of Jargeau – your eyes will thank you. This is the stunningly scenic Loire Valley, so lengthy explores are a must: travel among beaucoup de châteaux in the car, row along to one of the neighbouring towns for boat, canoe or kayak trips on the river, or clamber into the saddle to get started on the 800-kilometre Loire à Velo cycle path, which passes right by the site entrance. If a more sedate getaway is needed, there’s no need to travel far – there’s a sandy beach to laze on, an indoor pool to float serenely in and public tennis courts for a little exercise all within five minutes’ walk, and a pétanque court on site when even that much walking simply won’t do. Sticking around site comes highly recommended during high season, when kids can get in some outdoor play while grownups snooze in the shade, and evening time brings entertainment with it. Peckish moments can be dealt with by trotting along to reception to nab fresh bread and pastries or an ice cream, and there are plenty of shops and restaurants in Jargeau to satisfy more substantial appetites for local eats. Between June and September, there are also food trucks on site from 6pm to 10pm.

Local attractions

Start with a wander around Jargeau’s historical centre, following in the steps of Joan of Arc and Dauphin Charles VII, who attacked the town in the 15th century, then keep feet in the past with stops at the Oscar Roty museum to learn about the famous La Semeuse and at Musée Maurice Genevoix to see collections of rare books, drawings and songs by the writer. Leave museums behind for a spell outdoors with Loire walks and nature workshops at the Maison de Loire ecomuseum in Jargeau, trips to the Parc Floral de la Source and Arboretum des Grandes Bruyères, 20 minutes’ drive from base, and jaunts into the Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Nature Park an hour and a half away. And as this is the Loire, châteaux won’t be hard to find… Chamerolles, Sully-sur-Loire, Chambord, Gien, Saint-Brisson-sur-Loire, Blancafort and Meung-sur-Loire are all within an hour, and dozens more not much farther – there’s even a theme park full of châteaux miniatures an hour and a half away if travelling to each and every one isn’t possible. For urban days, the half-hour drive to Orleans is highly recommended for adventure parks, museums, galleries and theatres – for something grander, Paris is two hours away.
