  • Peaceful family-friendly site on the banks of Le Beuvron river
  • A half-hour drive to Château de Chambord; ZooParc de Beauval 55 mins
  • Bike hire, tennis and play area on site; village shops 10 mins' walk
Now, this is a lovely Loir-et-Cher setting for a relaxed break with the family – Camping La Varenne is in a wooded spot on the banks of Le Beuvron river in the Sologne des Étangs area, a place that’s got lots of small bodies of water scattered across its landscape. Facilities on site are also geared up to a good family holiday, including a play area to keep the kids busy, plus games of tennis, table tennis and pétanque to give everyone a bit of gentle activity and competition. There are bikes to hire as well, so you can all get out to explore easily enough even if you can’t bring your own wheels. The main bathroom block is fully heated and has lots of useful things like hairdryers and accessible facilities alongside the showers and toilets. The setting is mostly really quite rural here, but it’s also handily only a 10-minute walk to get to the village amenities of Neung-sur-Beuvron, which include shops, a bakery, a bank and a couple of bars and places to eat. You may well choose to stay local for many of your days out, but it’s worth noting that Le Beuvron is not the only river around here – you’ll also be in a good position for getting out to explore the Loire Valley, with gorgeous places like Chambord and Blois within 40 minutes’ drive, and a whole host of wineries to visit.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked We had a huge shaded pitch. The campsite was quiet and we had a very warm welcome. There were lots of showers and toilets. The kids loved the table tennis but you could also play petanque and tennis. Nice book swap by the reception. Supermarket nearby.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked Nice discrete pitches which were quite large and plenty of hedging. Couple of lovely tennis courts. We got stuck in the mud on one pitch but the staff were incredibly helpful in getting us out. Very nice village just up the road with an incredible bakery serving fabulous croissants. The auberge in town was good but had a fixed menu limited to expensive and very expensive amd we found even the “cheaper” menu to serve far too much food. Was pretty good food mind.

Disliked Mosquitoes were ever present and there was a hornets nest somewhere close by which was quite alarming when we were digging the van out. The facilities were getting on a bit.

In dem momentanen Zustand nur für die Durchreise geeignet

Power optional grass campsite

Power optional grass campsite

Liked Friendly receptionist.
Quiet but only 3 pitches occupied during our stay.
The toilets despite needing upgrading they were really clean.

Disliked No security and felt vulnerable as locals entered the site.
Mosquitoes. Not the fault of the site but they were horrendous. So much so that we left a day early as we couldn’t stand being bitten anymore.
Long grass on the pitches this encouraged midges and mosquitoes to be present everywhere we’re on the pitch.
Toilets were really clean but they really do need an upgrade.

Local attractions

The Loire Valley châteaux are famed the world over, so it’s well worth getting out to see some of them while you’re here – perhaps the classic turrets of Château de Chambord (half an hour’s drive) or Château Royal de Blois (45 minutes), which showcases several architectural styles from across the ages in one building. Staying a little closer to home, you might to get out to explore the local area on a lakeside walk around Le Beaufray (10 minutes), or following one of the hiking trails from Neung-sur-Beuvron (the Garry and Boucle de la Ferté trails, both about 10 kilometres, are both popular picks). Throw in some local history and culture too with an outing to the Maison des Étangs (10 minutes) or Maison du Braconnage (half an hour). For kid-pleasing days out, head to ZooParc de Beauval (55 minutes) or stop in to discover the sweet world of Chocolaterie Max Vauché Bracieux (20 minutes).
