It's free, quick and easy!
- Peaceful and English-speaking rural site in the village of Pérassay
- Walking, cycling and watersports within 20 minutes' drive
- Outdoor pool and bike hire; bar, restaurant, shop and bread in village
Walk in the steps of writers and painters at La Grange Camping and Caravanning, a peaceful rural site in the Indre county of France's Centre region.
The writer George Sand settled near here in the 1850s, and was so struck by the spectacular château at Boussac towering over the Creuse valley, that she set part of her novel there: you'll surely see why when you spy it too... She also (sensibly) invited hordes of artistic pals to come and visit her, and the surrounding terrain has been painted many times by the likes of Monet, Guillaumin and Dupré: you'll surely see why when you spy it too.
Bring your easel along if you’re that way inclined, as there are some fab views from this pretty spot in the village of Pérassay, with its wide meadow and centuries-old barn. Catering to your active side, there’s a small outdoor pool, you can hire mountain bikes from the site, and the friendly, English-speaking proprietors will drop you off and/or pick you up if you want to take some long hikes in the surrounding countryside.
Pérassay has a small general store, visits from a bread van every day, and a friendly bar, café and restaurant with a set menu. If you'd rather have eats among the handsome views on site, a barbecue area is to hand for guests' use.

Local attractions
The proprietors can point you towards the various footpaths crisscrossing the locality, and advise on bigger, longer expeditions. If you’re more into pounding pavements, it’s half an hour to see the village of Nohant where Sand finally settled and an hour to Argenton-sur-Creuse, a riverside spot so striking it’s sometimes compared to Venice: museums and galleries abound and the remains of the Roman settlement are worth a nose round too.
Equally satisfying, especially if you’re planning a scenic picnic or a grill-fest back at La Grange, are the weekly markets held in the various nearby towns: Sainte-Sévère, Boussac and La Châtre can all be reached in a 20-minute drive and you’ll leave them groaning with local produce.
For more active pursuits, there’s waterskiing and wakeboarding at Pouligny-Notre-Dame and all sorts of further water-based frolics on the lake at Sidailles, both 20 minutes away; you can zipwire your way through the trees at Sidailles as well or just swim in the lake and sun yourself on the beach.
For animal encounters, try horse and pony treks from the equestrian centre at Le Chambon (45 minutes) or visit the furry and (reasonably) friendly wolf pack at Les Loups de Chabrières an hour away; they're part of a bigger wildlife park around the hilly and forested Monts de Guéret that's also home to deer and badgers, foxes and boar.
