  • Family-friendly campsite on the banks of the river Vienne
  • A kilometre from Marcilly-sur-Vienne; Tours 40 minutes' drive
  • Bar, tennis, play area and canoe/kayak hire
If you're after a base for exploring the lakelands of the Brenne or the vineyards of the lovely Loire Valley, have a look at Camping de La Motte, an accommodating and agreeable site a kilometre from the quiet village of Marcilly-sur-Vienne. Set deep in the gorgeous green countryside of the Centre region, this friendly site sits on flat, shaded and well-planted grounds on the western bank of the peaceful river Vienne. The site hires out canoes and kayaks so guests can spend their stays floating through the local area, perfecting their paddle skills and spotting nature on the way – and what could be more relaxing than that? Away from the water, practically minded holidaymakers will give a nod of approval to the site's handy bar, laundry room, web access and play area, while those of a sporty persuasion will find plenty more active options at the tennis courts, pétanque area and volleyball nets. Secure bike storage is also made available to guests who want it. For a meal out, you have the choice between strolling a kilometre over the bridge to pick up sandwiches at the bakery in Nouâtre or carrying on for the same distance along the riverbank to see what's on the menu in Marcilly-sur-Vienne.

Liked Out of season so very quiet. The host was very friendly and even offered to cook us dinner but we had come prepared. Excellent local wine purchased though. Lovely location right by the river and vineyards.

Powered grass and earth campsite

Liked Campsite, pitches and location were great. Friendly owners and always helpful.

Disliked Toilets and showers were dirty, with cob webs around ceilings, shower cubicles and light fittings. No toilet rolls. Plastic shower mats were broken. Generally very tired and in all in need of urgent modernisation and updating.

Local attractions

Coming for the countryside? Camping de La Motte is right on the edge of the Loire-Anjou-Touraine regional park and within an easy 45-minute drive of the Brenne's landscape of forests and lakes. Both of these areas are full of bike trails, footpaths and bridleways, with the Voie Verte that runs between Richelieu (20 minutes) and Chinon (30 minutes) particularly recommended by your hosts. On arrival in Chinon, stop for a couple of hours to stroll along the riverbanks and take in the local landscape from the top of its Royal Fortress before carrying on to the equally impressive Château de Montsoreau (45 minutes), an art gallery in a scenic setting close to the confluence between the Vienne and Loire rivers. And for the rest of your trip? You might like to spend it vineyard hopping through the Loire's wine-growing areas (roughly 30 minutes), exploring the narrow streets and medieval monuments of Tours old town (45 minutes) or taking the kids off somewhere for a treat – a trip to Futuroscope (45 minutes) perhaps, if they're on their very best behaviour…
