Peaceful place in the woods

  • Peaceful site by the Loire river, overlooking Métairie island
  • Direct access to the Loire à Vélo bike path to Tours and Amboise
  • Summer restaurant with homegrown and local produce, plus concerts
Take a trip to Indre-et-Loire and base yourself at the lovely leafy surrounds of Camping Les Acacias for prime access to the Loire, tours of Tours and châteaux galore. A friendly welcome awaits a couple of kilometres from La Ville-aux-Dames, close to the riverbank and overlooking the island of Métairie. However you roam it’s easy to get here: it’s close to an exit off the D751, 10 minutes’ drive from an intercity train station and a 15-minute drive from Tours airport. Once you’re through the gates, settle in for a peaceful time on a site filled with trees, grass and plenty of shaded spots. One of the highlights of the site is its food: the Camping Les Acacias owners have set up a permaculture farm with an orchard, kitchen, garden and henhouse, all providing the freshest of produce for the Taverne de la Métairie, the on-site summer restaurant. Pizzas, steak, salad and classic French desserts are all on the menu here, along with a kids’ menu and a concert stage with live music on some evenings. Menus are renewed every week. For some gentle activity, table tennis, pétanque and a well-equipped play area with slides, a trampoline and a summer bouncy castle are all on site. Barbecues are welcome and a supermarket is a five-minute drive or 20-minute walk away for supplies. Tours is 15 minutes’ drive from the site, or about half an hour by bike.

Liked: The size of the pitch was excellent, we were only stating one night travelling through from the south of France to the ferry the next day. The email info was great, so the check-in was remote. There is a large restaurant onsite, which had a good selection of food and drinks, the servers here were very pleasant and welcoming. Paid about £23 for the pitch for the night which was fine. Is in a woodland setting and apparently has really good cycle links to Tours, it would have been nice to investigate this but we couldn’t because of the ferry.

Disliked: Only one toilet block was open and it took us 10 minutes of wandering round the site to find it. There was Karaoke (every Friday) that was very loud - it appeared to attract a lot of locals and went on until nearly midnight, it made going to sleep in the tent quite difficult.

Liked: Nothing to like, sadly.

Disliked: On this form, I am asked where I stayed whether I would stay here again. However, that presupposes I was actually able to stay, or indeed do any of the usual things you do when you get to a campsite, like park your car after a long drive on a hot day; pitch your tent, make a cup of tea, have a bit of a lie down and so on. Unfortunately, despite paying up front and following the instructions given by email, that was impossible as the site was full and our booked-and-paid-for pitch was occupied when we arrived late on Saturday evening. I phoned the number provided, but it seemed to be out of service. I then left the first of several emails, which remain unanswered two days later. As the campsite seemed to be full up, there was no word from management, the reception but was closed up and it was already after 9pm -- the vehicle gate locks at 10pm -- we decided the only thing to do was get off site before getting locked in and go to a hotel. Naturally, I asked for my money back. Sadly the management of this site (unless this is a fraudulent listing) has not had the decency to reply to me, let alone apologise. I regard it as understandable that there may have been some mix up or people camping in the wrong spots. I can even accept that because we got in quite late there may have been nobody to answer the phone. Unfortunately, it's inexcusable to ignore me for two days, because it shows complete and total lack of respect towards a paying customer.

Liked: The ease of finding the site. Size of pitch. Ideal location on the way to southern France.

Disliked: Stone cold showers both the evening of arrival and the next morning. The main road right next to our pitches. Lack of an elsan point that we could see.

Local attractions

Saddle up for a day (or several) of cycling: this is prime territory for biking and the site has adult and kids’ bikes for hire. The big trail here is La Loire à Vélo, an 800-kilometre track flanking the river down to the coast. Don’t feel obliged to ride the whole thing; the seven-kilometre riverside route into Tours makes a most pleasant portion for many guests. Another excellent use of bikes is a tour of the area’s vineyards and wineries – there’s a cluster of them within a 45-minute cycle: source a sparkling wine on your travels and sample it as part of a riverside picnic. The Loire region is rightly famed for its castles, and there are several within striking distance here, either by bike or in the car. It’s 15 minutes’ drive to the gorgeous gardens of Château de Valmer, and 20 minutes (or an hour’s riverside cycle) to Amboise, to visit the medieval Château d’Amboise and Château du Clos Lucé, former residence of Leonardo da Vinci.
