  • Friendly family-run site by the Vienne river in Candes-Saint-Martin
  • A 20-minute drive to Saumur; half an hour to Château de Villandry
  • On the Loire à Vélo cycle route, with bike hire and laundry on site
Run by Emmanuelle and François, Camping Les Terres de Belle Rive is in a prime waterside spot in Candes-Saint-Martin, a pretty village at the confluence of the Vienne and Loire rivers, in central France. This friendly site is on the Loire à Vélo bike route, and it’s particularly well set up for cyclists of all sorts – there’s a safe cycle store for those bringing their own bikes and a hire facility for those who’d rather just take a short jaunt nearby. Other facilities on site include a laundry area, a grocery shop (for drinks, local produce and essentials) and an outdoor space with an equipped shared kitchen. There’s plenty of space to relax too (with a library of books to bury your head in, if you like), and the site also organises a few activities to bring guests together: kids, for example, can join mini wildlife hunts or become animal caretakers for the day (making friends with the goats and chickens). This location is a great one for exploring the Indre-et-Loire surroundings – the team on site can help arrange canoe and paddleboard outings, and there are plenty of places nearby for fishing, birdwatching, horse riding and walks – as well as all sorts of wineries and châteaux in towns like Saumur (20 minutes’ drive). The village setting also means that you can walk to shops, cafés, bakeries and restaurants within a few minutes.

Local attractions

The ceramics collection in Château de Saumur (20 minutes’ drive) is thought to be one of the best in the country. The castle also houses a horse museum with centuries-old farrier tools and horse tack. Saumur is renowned for its equine association, and you might want to pay a visit to Le Cadre Noir riding school. On the other hand, you might prefer to spend an afternoon tasting sparkling Crèmant at a local winery… It’s easy to while away a few hours in the extensive gardens at Château de Villandry (half an hour), an elegant Renaissance castle. They include a maze, the Ornamental Garden (best admired from above, in order to take in its themes and intricate details) and a wooded area for shaded strolls. Underground tunnels at Bioparc de Doué-la-Fontaine zoo (40 minutes) lead to various carefully recreated natural habitats, which include Madagascar (with two species of primates), a Leopard Canyon, and large African, South American and European aviaries.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Lovely, unfussy campsite on banks of Loire. Fabulous location and just a short walk into a beautiful town. Staff could not be friendlier. Little bar on site. The sanitary block is basic but was very clean. Quiet campsite, no loud music playing, families having fun, older couples, younger couples, cyclists - fabulous!
