- Family site near a lush forest five minutes’ drive from Henrichemont
- La Borne pottery village 10 minutes’ drive; Sancerre half an hour
- Dog-friendly; fishing pond with swimming areas; launderette
Right on the edge of the rather lush Bois de la Borne (the ‘small woods’ referred to in the name of the site), in the Cher department of central France, Camping du Petit Bois is a leafy family- and dog-friendly place with grass pitches (many with electricity) shaded by tall trees.
After parking by your pitch and setting up, head into the village of Henrichemont (five minutes’ drive or 25 minutes’ walk) to look around. Fishing is available between mid-May and October in the nearby Étang du Petit Bois, a peaceful tree-lined pond with two swimming beaches (open July and August), picnic areas and children’s games.
Besides fishing, you can go on epic walks or bike rides around here – not just in the surrounding woods, but at the Chemin des Merisiers (20 minutes) or at the Natural Reserve of the Loire Valley (50 minutes).
The site has toilet blocks and showers for guests, plus a washing-up area and a launderette.

Local attractions
The hamlet of La Borne (10 minutes’ drive or one hour on foot, less if you go through the woods) has a centuries-long history as a ceramics hub. In addition to the Contemporary Ceramics Center, which runs workshops for all ages, there are dozens of pottery studios in the village, where you can meet the artists and purchase their creations.
Wine lovers make a beeline for the hilltop village of Sancerre (half an hour), in the Loire Valley, which is surrounded by vineyards as far as the eye can see. After tasting the local Sauvignon Blanc at wine bars, restaurants or at the chateaus where it’s produced, soak up the local atmosphere with a stroll through the pretty medieval streets.
On the banks of the Auron river, the city of Bourges (35 minutes) is renowned for the splendid Gothic architecture of its 12th-century cathedral. There are also museums covering subjects as varied as natural history, trains and the resistance during World War II, not to mention plenty of green areas such as the Prés Fichaux Garden.
