- Leafy family-friendly site edging Lake Graçay in Centre-Val de Loire
- Château de Valençay half an hour drive; ZooParc de Beauval 55 minutes
- Communal kitchen and games room; pétanque court; toy and book library
Looking for an old-world camping adventure – the sort we remember from our childhood? That’s what you’ll get at Camping de Graçay, a family-run site on the edge of a small, namesake lake in Centre-Val de Loire; it offers traditional camping with spacious pitches, simple facilities and a welcoming atmosphere.
This is not the place for you if you’re looking for organised entertainment or late-night parties. It’s somewhere that travellers get together to chat in the communal kitchen, compete against each other at ping pong and pétanque, or settle around the evening campfire to swap travel stories. If you’re not feeling sociable? Bury yourself in the library with a favourite book.
Kids can safely enjoy the playground and run around in the landscaped grounds, and there’s a permanent treasure hunt they can follow around the site as well as outdoor games, puzzles and a toy library.
Fishing for pike and black bass is allowed on the lake, but you’ll need a valid permit. However, swimming in both the lake and neighbouring River Pozon is strictly prohibited. If you want a dip, Graçay’s municipal pool is open during the summer holidays and offers discounted rates to site guests. It’s less than five minutes’ walk away.
Despite its peaceful situation set amid greenery, Camping de Graçay is an easy stop on main holiday routes, being around five minutes’ drive from Junction 9 of the A20 autoroute. It’s also a handy base for exploration of the Berry region and the Loire Valley châteaux.

Local attractions
Kids will probably want their first sightseeing trip to be at ZooParc de Beauval (55 minutes’ drive), where they can watch endangered giant pandas and tigers in spacious habitats. You will probably want to make the Loire Valley châteaux your first stop, whether it be the gleaming white Renaissance palace at Valençay (half an hour), magical moated Chambord (an hour and 10 minutes) or Château de Bouges (20 minutes), a lesser-known gem with ornate formal gardens.
The similarly named Bourges (45 minutes) has deservedly been awarded European Capital of Culture for 2028; spending a day in this UNESCO-listed town means touring its Gothic-style cathedral with intricate stained-glass windows, seeing ancient artefacts like the Egyptian mummy and bronze Etruscan sculptures in the Musée du Berry, and visiting the splendid 15th-century Jacques Cœur Palace
If you’d like to sample some local wines, you can book in at prestigious Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée vineyards at Reuilly (20 minutes) and Quincy (25 minutes) in the Loire Valley wine region, where tours of the cellars and tastings await.
