  • Quiet family site 45 minutes' drive from Mâcon and Beaujolais wineries
  • In La Clayette, a short walk away from the town centre and shops
  • Scenic and shaded, with facilities like pétanque and miniature golf
Schedule yourself some time to unwind at Camping Les Bruyères, a traditional family site run by Noémie and Cyrille. Set in La Clayette in Saône et Loire, this peaceful southern Burgundy site is a short walk away from the town's shops and lake and a 20-minute walk away from its grand 14th- and 19th-century castle. At this site, you should expect excellent views, shaded grounds and the addition of free access to the La Clayette water park's three swimming pools in season. Wine buffs may already recognise southern Burgundy as the home of the Brionnais, Mâconnais and Beaujolais vineyards; they’re the favoured tipples to go alongside local treats including Charolais beef, Dufoux chocolate and AOC Charolais goat’s cheese. If you’re into such things, you could easily spend many days grazing your way around the area’s markets and restaurants. And if you fancy something a bit simpler, or should the kids not have quite such diverse tastes? That’s all sorted back on site, where more familiar fare is served up at the snack bar (open during high season only). There’s a supermarket a couple of minutes’ walk away too, should you wish to pick up your own supplies. Outside of feeding times, it’s up to you what you get up to on site. Dispatch the kids to the playground and pick a spot on site to let lunch go down while admiring the views over the lake and castle, or make a start on burning up the calories at the pétanque court, miniature golf or sports courts for tennis, basketball and football.

Local attractions

You can’t come to this corner of the world and ignore all the gorgeous châteaux – once you’ve trotted off to the castle in La Clayette (20 minutes’ walk), follow it up with a trip to Château de Drée (10 minutes’ drive), Château Saint Hugues (25 minutes) and Chateau de La Roche, on its own little river island an hour away. Kids demanding something with a bit more activity? Take them off to the treasure hunts and treetop trails at Acro’bath adventure park (35 minutes’ drive), the quad bikes at Rando Quads (10 minutes) or the zoo, theme park and waterpark at Le PAL (an hour). And those vineyards? If you’d like to take in a whole bunch, you’d be best making tracks to Mâcon or Beaujolais, both around 45 minutes away – there are heaps of tours and tastings to be had in the countryside between the towns.
