It's free, quick and easy!
- Family-friendly site on an island in the Loire with stunning views
- A 10-minute walk from the centre of La Charité-sur-Loire
- Handy stopover on long canoe trips and Loire à Velo bike rides
Heading off for a Burgundy break? Bagging a berth on the banks of the Loire would be a most excellent idea. But take your riverside stays to the next level and settle on an island right there in the middle of the mighty river – how’s that for extra holiday points (or bragging rights, if you like)?
This novel experience can be had at Camping de la Saulaie, which takes its castaways to the island of Fauborg and gives them views of La Charité-sur-Loire, the medieval town 10 minutes’ walk away from the site (the island is linked to the mainland via road bridge on both sides – no need to start fashioning your own raft to source supplies).
Folk stop by here with many diverse activities in mind: it’s a handy stopping point for those making a long pilgrimage on the St James’s Way, pedalling along the Loire à Velo bike route or paddling canoes along the river. And it’s also most welcoming to those with less ambitious plans that mainly involve château visits, gentle strolls and in-depth examination of the local cheese and wine offerings.
Whatever plans you have for the days, nights will be spent at a family-friendly site that welcomes travelling dogs and has a play area and games room for the entertainment of les enfants. Strolling into town for dinner is a cinch, but if you’d rather make the most of your island setting you’re equally welcome to set up a barbecue for a self-cooked dinner.

Local attractions
Feeling active (but not quite so active as to set out on one of the long-distance options)? Set out for more easily achievable walks in the Bois de Raveau (15 minutes’ drive), Forêt de Bertranges (20 minutes) or the Forêt de Poiseux (half an hour), or hire canoes a few minutes’ walk from the site to paddle as far as you feel able along the river.
It’s worth strolling around La Charité-sur-Loire, too – the town’s church and priory are UNESCO-listed, and the historic centre is famed for the booksellers, illustrators and bookbinders squirrelled away among the medieval ramparts.
The Loire Valley staples of châteaux and wineries are in plentiful supply around here: for the former, head to Château Grand’Cour, Château des Bordes or Château de Pesselières, all of which are within a 20-minute drive. Follow up by making the 25-minute drive north to the wineries strewn along the river near Sancerre to select a bottle or few to take back for sundowners on site.
