It's free, quick and easy!
- Medieval-themed site and horse riding centre on the Cotentin Peninsula
- On the edge of a regional natural park, 15 minutes' drive from the sea
- Riding lessons, beachside rides and carriage trips available
Might your small sorts like to fire their imaginations by taking a step back in time for a castle-themed stay with the chance to gallop about on horseback? Knights, damsels, their kin and their hounds can expect a warm medieval-style welcome at this rural Lower Normandy site five minutes' drive from La Haye.
Away from the days-of-yore design and kit (which includes a firepit too cook over), Écurie Leseigneur is primarily a horse riding centre so all manner of lessons and horsey jaunts can be had on site, with teachers on hand offering expert supervision for all needs and abilities. There are also horse-drawn carts, donkeys and seaside outings available should you wish to steer your steed through the surf. Hopping out of the saddle, it's a doddle to explore the region on foot or by bike: the centre is in a handy spot at the crossroads of four traffic-free greenways, some of which have sea views.
Tennis, fishing, a play area and a games room are among the facilities on site for times when you and your budding knights need a break from all the jousting. There’s also a communal lounge area with a kitchen and a bar but if you’d like to fully embrace the castle life and be truly treated like royalty, shun the cooking and ask site staff to prepare you a meal basket packed with local fare (order at least 24 hours ahead).

Local attractions
The Cotentin Peninsula has more than its fair share of outdoor leisure ops. Mont Castré (10 minutes’ drive) is home to a lake with well-marked footpaths and pedalos for hire, while Forest Adventure (10 minutes) has a high-ropes course for treetop thrills. For more open-air time, head to nearby Denneville (15 minutes), where there's plenty of sandy beach.
If you've come here, there's a fair chance you're curious about the past. Walk in the footsteps of monks of yore at Lessay Abbey (10 minutes), or head to the Château de Bricquebec (25 minutes) and survey the townsfolk from its medieval ramparts. The beaches around these parts may be peaceful nowadays, but in the not so distant past they were the site of epoch-making battles. If modern history piques your fancy, head to the excellent D-Day Experience and Normandy Victory Museum (half an hour from base).
Further afield, Bayeux (with its far-famed tapestry, cathedral and museums) is an hour's drive away, while the spectacular citadel of Mont Saint-Michel is an hour and 40 minutes. Pilgrims to this spiritual spot should wear sturdy footwear: there are a good amount of steps to climb for those venturing uphill to the Abbey.
