  • Dog-friendly site in the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Nature Park
  • Next to Lac d'Aydat and a 20-minute drive from Saint-Nectaire
  • Outdoor pool, playground and playing field; beach a short walk away
Making your way to Auvergne in search of volcanoes, lakes and waterfalls? Camping du Lac d’Aydat is a mighty fine place to put down roots – it's a 10-minute drive from Puy-de-Dome (one of the youngest volcanoes around these parts) and 20 minutes from Saint-Nectaire (where caves, waterfalls and Romanesque architecture lie in store). First things first, though, you’ll probably want to take in Lac d’Aydat, which this dog-friendly site is positioned next to. There’s bike hire five minutes’ walk from the site if a quick lap takes your fancy – or the beach and nautical centre are both around 15 minutes’ stroll on foot. If treetop clambers sound like your kind of thing, Aydat Aventure (10 minutes’ walk) runs those. Five minutes’ walk away, Les nes d'Alexandre et Sylvain runs kids’ donkey rides too. Camping du Lac d’Aydat is a handy base for exploration all-around really, as it’s in the centre of the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Nature Park, 20 minutes’ drive southwest of Clermont-Ferrand. Most of the big-hit tourist spots can be reached within a 20 or 30-minute drive at most, and Puy de Sancy is 50 minutes' drive away. Back at your base, expect to find a wildlife haven with things like evening entertainment and a kids’ club during high season. There’s a playing field for friendly games of football, beach volley and badminton, as well as a boules pitch, table tennis, a kids’ playground and an outdoor swimming pool surrounded by sun loungers. So, relax and tuck into the woodfired pizzas served on site – this is a place for dog-friendly breaks and plenty of quality time in the Massif Central.

Local attractions

There’s a theme park where you and the kids can learn all about the discovery of volcanoes – Vulcania (half an hour’s drive) is the name – but of course, you’ll also want to see them up close. Puy-de-Dome (10 minutes) is a fine one with huge lava domes, cider cones and maars. A train or hike can get you to the top, and once there, adventurous types can descend with a paragliding session. Set on visiting Saint-Nectaire (20 minutes) too? With a waterfall, cave and craft exhibitions, the Petrifying Fountains of Saint-Nectaire (25 minutes) might be one stop. Others? Perhaps Église de Saint-Nectaire (20 minutes), a fine example of a church with Romanesque architecture and art pieces? A hike to Saillant Fall (20 minutes)? Or tours around the medieval Château de Murol (20 minutes)? The Massif du Sancy mountain range is another splendid location, famed for the tallest French volcano Puy de Sancy (50 minutes) and a haven for all things skiing, canyoning and hiking.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked: Great location, lovely lake to swim in, good location for those planning to hike (30 mins drive to Mont-Dore). Great bread in the morning. Excellent showers

Disliked: We stayed late in the season and the restaurant closed the day after we arrived, which was a shame. The one night we ate there, the pizza and salad was amazing. The pool was also closed, which we hadn't realised when booking.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked: Quiet site

Disliked: The reception had no record of our booking despite us booking via Pitch Up & having confirmation from Pitch Up in early May. This was not a great start & nearly lead to us being turned away which wasn’t helpful.
