Allez with immediacy to Camping des Gorges de l'Allier if you seek proximity to the spectacular Allier gorges, their river and a lively town within simple sauntering distance – and let's add a lush woodland park for good measure too.
Camping des Gorges de l'Allier is under 10 minutes' walk from the Auvergne town of Langeac, with direct access to the river (canoeing and kayaking ahoy) and with easy access to the Allier gorges via the tourist train between Langeac and Langogne. The site covers 14 green and handsome woodland hectares, with colourful flowers all around and loads of room to wander
This friendly place welcomes all ages and has an excellent range of leisure options for all, including a pretty outdoor pool among the trees and with considerable sunbathing space and plentiful loungers alongside. There's also a well-equipped playground with swing, slide, seesaw and roundabout, a pétanque court, and – should the weather be less than blazingly sunny or you want to retreat indoors – a TV room. Fishing is available directly from the site too, so bring your kit if angling is your bag.
There's a snack bar for eats, along with a terrace for eats and drinks al fresco – and possibly plotting just where among this lush land you can explore next…

Local attractions
Langeac (a couple of minutes' drive or just under a kilometre's amble away) is one of the 13 large towns of the Auvergne region, and is lively all year round with sporty and cultural activities, country fairs and a busy market on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The town's also the starting point for a firm must-do if you're anywhere around this part of the Haute-Loire: the tourist train through the Allier gorges. This splendidly scenic route runs for 67 kilometres from Langeac to Langogne in the Lozère, along steep gorges inaccessible to vehicles, and passing volcanoes, tunnels and 16 viaducts along the way.
Horse riders can arrange hacks through the remote lands of the upper Allier region from Langeac: drop into the tourist office on Place Aristide Briand to find out more. There are forest trails, treetop adventuring, climbing and biking to investigate around Auvergne too, along with the swimming, fishing, canoeing and kayaking available along the length of the Allier.
