  • Parkland site seven kilometres from Montalivet on the Côte d'Argent
  • Near hundreds of Margaux wine châteaux in the Médoc wine region
  • Pool with sunbathing area; playground with trampoline; pizza snack bar
Seaside and wine go rather nicely together – as does a peaceful setting while you're trying out your next tipple… Source the lot – along with a gorgeously green setting and room aplenty – at Camping La Chesnays, a parkland site on the French Atlantic's Côte d'Argent. It's a mightily well placed spot for coastal adventures: La Chesnays is seven kilometres from the seaside town of Vendays-Montalivet, and next to the famed and award-winning 12-kilometre beach of Montalivet-les-Bains backed by sand dunes and extensive pine forests. It's also in the Médoc wine region for those who like to sample French vin: pick up numerous samples at the wine châteaux near Margaux and Pauillac to test out back at base or on the beach (although Montlivet is a popular surfing and beach spot, its size means it doesn't get mobbed even in the height of summer). On site, you can have watery days in the outdoor pool or sunny days sunbathing alongside, play pétanque or tennis, or take the kids along to bounce around the activity area or trampoline. There's loads of room to wander around too; when you need to be refuelled, potter along to the snack bar for some pizza or fresh bread.

Local attractions

Sticking to what's around on land, horse riding can be had a kilometre from the site, or you could hire a bike to see what's what on the department's cycle trails: Gironde has 435 kilometres of paths and bike lanes, including a 100-kilometre stretch running for the whole west coast of the Médoc peninsula and linking Montalivet to the small town of Vendays. By water, fishing, canoeing, kitesurfing and sailing are all available seven kilometres away in Montalivet, a town that's also a popular place for surfing because of its strong waves. Wakeboarding and sailing are at the Lac d'Hourtin-Carcans 20 kilometres away, and more surfing is at nearby Soulac-sur-Mer, just along the coast. If you're an enthusiast of le vin, stop off first at nearby Margaux, for heaps of info on the hundreds of local wine châteaux at the Château Margaux tourist information office (ask for the Destination Vignobles en Médoc leaflet to find which ones you can visit). Pauillac, on the Gironde estuary, is also a famed wine town with plenty of châteaux to visit including the Château Lafite-Rothschild, Château Latour and Château Mouton Rothschild. The Animalia Parc zoo is 10 kilometres away, at the pine forest and seaside town of Naujac-sur-Mer.
