Safari tents tucked away among the trees

  • Peaceful site among the pine trees of the Landes de Gironde forest
  • Carcans Plage and Lac d’Hourtin-Carcans within a 10-minute drive
  • Table tennis, pétanque and barbecue area among the trees
If your holiday schedule involves beach days, watersports and forest trails, plus chilled-out evenings of table tennis, pétanque and barbecue dinners, you should be pretty pleased with the setup at Camping le Capdeville. This peaceful and nature-filled site is tucked away in the Landes de Gironde forest, part of the Médoc Regional Natural Park. The pine trees give plenty of shade for guests, as well as bringing a lovely scent and a sense of calm to the place. Ping pong tables and a pétanque area provide places for a bit of gentle activity, and there’s a barbecue area and picnic tables where you can sort out your alfresco meals. A launderette, a wifi service and bathrooms with toilets and showers (including accessible facilities) complete the list of amenities at this laidback site, which aims to give guests the relaxed vibe of wild camping in the woods but with the added comfort that comes from modern facilities. Carcans (three minutes’ drive) is a handy local source of shops and places to eat, while turning in the other direction takes you to Carcans Plage (10 minutes) for days of surfing, swimming and scrambling in the dunes. Lac d’Hourtin-Carcans is close by for watersports, and the area is laced with walking/cycling trails through forests, vineyards and small villages.

Local attractions

This is a fabulous area for outdoor activities, with lots of walking and bike trails winding through the surrounding scenery. You may like to go walking or mountain biking in the shade of the nearby forest or pick up cycle trails from just outside the site to the beach (or the coastal cycle path). Speaking of the beach, Carcans Plage is about 10 minutes’ drive away, and an excellent spot for family days of swimming and playing in the sand or some time out surfing the waves; there are surf schools for those whose technique needs a little help. More watersports, plus fishing, an adventure park and lake beaches, are at Lac d’Hourtin-Carcans. Those with a taste for wine may well have spotted that the Médoc Regional Natural Park is also a winemaking hotspot – you may like to visit some of the wineries clustered around Pauillac (half an hour’s drive) or head to Bordeaux (an hour) to learn more about winemaking at the Cité du Vin. There’s plenty more to see in the city though – including the Miroir d’Eau, the medieval Grosse Cloche and the Musée d’Aquitaine.
