You'll have heaps of fun at Bøsøre Strand Feriepark, a kid-friendly and fun-filled resort inspired by the fairy tales of famed Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. There are two fab waterparks and a huge programme of activities and entertainment here, all against the backdrop of a mature forest and next to a sandy beach overlooking the Great Belt in southern Funen.
Water fans will feel particularly at home here: the biggest draw to Bøsøre Strand Feriepark is its indoor and outdoor waterparks that cater to all ages and energy levels. Indoors, the tropical waterpark is set across three tiers and has a huge surf slide; a sauna corner is on the top tier, and there are spa areas where you can be pleasantly pummelled by jets of soothing warm water. The outdoor waterpark has four tubular slides for kids to whizz down while grownups stretch out on the sun loungers.
With several excellent playgrounds, trampolines, an adventure football course, a miniature golf course, a rose garden with a giant chessboard, an infants' activity room and horse riding (during high season), there's no danger of kids running out of things to do or places to make new pals. When you're feeling a little weary or need to get from one part of the park to the other sharpish, rent a bike or take the Bøsøre express – the free miniature train that chugs its way around the site every day in high season and on Saturdays during quieter times.
Traditional à la carte and buffet-style Danish fare is served at the site's restaurant, snacks and treats at the on-site shop, and guests are welcome to barbecue their own food to save a krone or two. For starlit soirées, there's also a campfire area right on the beach for nighttime storytelling sessions against the backdrop of the Great Belt.

There's stacks to do within a short drive of this fairytale Funen setting, including several pretty castles and manor houses. Take a trip over to the 16th-century defensive fortress of Hesselagergård Manor and its ancient 20-hectare park, divvied up into several areas including a Renaissance garden with fountains and topiary figures.
The Baroque splendour of 16th-century Glorup Manor is a similar distance from Bøsøre Strand, about eight kilometres away in eastern Funen, and Europe's best preserved Renaissance water castle, Egeskov, lies half an hour's drive from the site.
For water-based adventure 30 kilometres away, explore Davinde lake by canoe or boat, then procure yourself some firewood there for an evening campfire by the water's edge before heading back to base.
