How did Færgegårdens Camping get its name, which translates as ‘the ferry garden’? Well, there’s a bit of history behind that… And that history goes back rather a long way, all the way to 1890 when this site opened its doors to guests for the first time. Invariably, those guests were mainly in the area to make use of the ferry to or from Spodsbjerg, the little harbour town that was the main route on and off the island of Langeland; the location is so handy that the place often housed the ferrymen themselves too. That ferry (well, a more modern version of it) still runs to Lolland these days, forming part of the country’s Route 9 – a nifty route that links several islands and passes very close to the site. And the site is still going strong too, proudly boasting the title of the oldest site on the island. If you’re tackling a jaunt around southern Denmark or hanging around for an extended taste of island life, this makes a fine spot in which to settle: it's right next to the beach, and the local shop and seafood restaurant are both within a very short amble. It may have history but this isn’t a place that’s stuck in the past: the folk here do their best to keep the traditional vibe going while also constantly updating the facilities. As such, guests can play pétanque, hire bikes and e-bikes, hang out at the beachside café or join jolly singalong evenings but also avail of such handy amenities as a launderette, wifi and well-maintained bathrooms.

Local attractions

Life moves pretty slowly on Langeland, so your first task here is simply to chill out and take in the view from the beach by the site. Once you’ve done that, the logical next step is to clamber onto a bike (either one hired on site or one you’ve brought along) and head off to pootle along the island’s quiet cycle paths to see the wild horses roaming. The landscapes and light of this pretty island have inspired many an artist over the years, and you can see a fair amount of the results at the galleries that open in summer; a favourite spot is up in the old electric tower that’s now been turned into an exhibition space. Also on the agenda for your stay should be outings to Tranekær Castle (half an hour by bike/15 minutes’ drive), a 13th-century fort with a fab sculpture garden, and the excellent Langelandsfort (half an hour’s drive), where you can see Cold War bunkers and a submarine, or take your chance to drive a tank.
