- Peaceful site 15 minutes’ drive from Klatovy in the Šumava foothills
- Švihov Castle 45 minutes by bike and Castle Kašperk an hour’s drive
- Livestock on site; playground and pétanque court 15 minutes’ walk
If you’re wanting to escape everyday life, head for Věckovice Camping in the northern Šumava foothills, where a well-maintained site offers stunning views over forested hills to the historic town of Klatovy. Easily accessed down a tree-lined drive, the well-maintained camping field is sheltered by trees; there’s plenty of space for everyone, so pitch up where you please. Campfires and firepits are permitted, and you can gather firewood in the forest nearby.
Goats and horses graze in adjoining meadows, so while dogs are welcome, please keep them under control – there is a designated fenced area where they can have a run around, otherwise please keep them on leads while on site.
As befits nearly wild camping, facilities are sparse: a composting toilet in the corner of the field and electricity available on request. However, there are cycle paths and walking routes direct from the pitches, and the small village of Věckovice (five minutes’ walk) has a playground and pétanque court. In Klatovy (15 minutes’ drive), you can explore its photogenic baroque-era heart, pick up supplies from the shops or eat out in traditional cellar restaurants.
An extra bonus: Věckovice Camping is a paradise for mushrooms foraging from late August to the end of October.
