The Šumava foothills await walkers and cyclists keen to explore locally; routes wind their way through green valleys, woodland and traditional farming villages on quiet rural roads. If you’re looking to discover the cultural heritage of the region, the ride to Švihov (45 minutes by bike) rewards with a moated Gothic-era castle open for tours of its grand halls and vast kitchens. Visit the Museum of Technology and Crafts in Koloveč (15 minutes’ drive) to learn about the Šumava region’s traditional pottery and embroidery, or head for the clifftop splendour of Castle Kašperk (an hour) to explore its medieval towers and courtyard – and admire the views. The handsome centre of Klatovy (15 minutes) reveals the twin-spired baroque-era Jesuit Church with its macabre catacombs – and don’t miss the extravagant baroque wood carvings in the centuries-old Pharmacy at the White Unicorn. Families with children can happily spend a morning in Věckovice (five minutes’ walk), where there’s a playground with trampoline, swings and a mini-golf course. You can also get competitive over games of pétanque and skittles. If you need to up the action a bit further, Kdyně (25 minutes’ drive) has waterslides and whirlpools at the Water Fun Centre.
